Extended Assignment Team - Respiratory Therapist

Position Details

Facility: WAB - Wellstar Administrative Building
Shift: 7p-7a

Program Commitment
  • Complete one 13-week assignment from Oct 1st to March 31st (surge season) each year.
  • Extended Assignment Team Members work under a contingency staffing model as PRN staff with no guaranteed hours.
  • Scheduled for 36 hours/week, with all scheduling done at the unit level; employees work 3 Mondays and/or Fridays and 3 Saturdays and/or Sundays in a 4-week period.
Placement and Job Summary

New team members are placed based on facility needs and will not receive a service agreement prior to final clearance. The Respiratory Therapist (RRT) reports to the RC Manager/Director and is responsible for medication administration, respiratory care, patient education, and collaboration with healthcare teams, primarily in critical care settings. The role involves independent decision-making, patient assessment, procedures such as ventilator management, airway management, ABG sampling, and patient/family education. The RRT also participates in staff development and quality improvement activities.

Core Responsibilities
Provides Customer Service
  • Complete patient care documentation and education
  • Promote team spirit and a positive work environment
  • Support staff and student education
Administers Quality Patient Care
  • Perform patient assessments and collaborate on care planning
  • Deliver aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene, oxygen therapy, and medical gas therapy
  • Manage ventilators, perform weaning, interpret waveforms, and manage airways
  • Conduct arterial blood gas sampling and analysis
  • Educate patients and mentor staff and students
  • Assist with invasive procedures and cardiac services as needed
Provides Safe & Quality Environment
  • Maintain electronic documentation
  • Ensure patient safety and support performance improvement
  • Promote evidence-based practices and review protocols
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an AMA-approved training program in Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Sciences (B.S. required)
  • Certifications required upon hire: BLS, ACLS, NRP, PALS, Respiratory Care Prof
  • Minimum 1 year inpatient RT experience required; 2 years preferred
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and computer skills
