Job description

The Penn State Applied Research Laboratory is seeking a full-time Experimental Machinist Fabricator. Responsibilities include:

  • Perform precise machining operations using various tools and equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Interpret drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions to fabricate parts from diverse materials.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate CNC machinery, programming tool paths in multiple axes.
  • Design and build specialized tools, jigs, and fixtures for manufacturing and experimental purposes.
  • Conduct tool tryouts, troubleshoot, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Plan and execute complex machine setups and operations.
  • Calculate and ensure accuracy considering material deflections and distortions.
  • Perform high-precision fitting, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Collaborate with engineers on new designs and methods with minimal prior information.
  • Inspect own work for errors and defects, reporting issues as needed.
  • Execute various welding techniques, join dissimilar metals, and perform finishing processes.

Requirements include advanced mathematics, interpretation of complex drawings, and broad trade training, equivalent to a recognized apprenticeship or a combination of high school and technical college education, with over five years of experience. Candidates will undergo a security background check and must be U.S. citizens.

Work schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., with weekends off.
