JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Applied Research Laboratory is seeking a full-time Experimental Machinist Fabricator. Responsibilities include:

  1. Perform machining operations with high precision using various shop equipment, including lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and specialized tools, with minimal supervision.
  2. Work from drawings, prints, sketches, and verbal instructions to fabricate parts from materials such as steel, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and other exotic materials.
  3. Set up, adjust, and operate CNC equipment; generate tool paths using software for multi-axis fabrication.
  4. Modify existing programs via Manual Input (MDI).
  5. Design and build complex tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges for standard and experimental parts.
  6. Conduct tool tryouts, troubleshoot, and make corrections.
  7. Plan and perform machine and bench operations involving complex setups and machining techniques.
  8. Visualize finished products, perform mathematical calculations, and account for deflections and distortions.
  9. Perform precise fitting and assembly operations.
  10. Collaborate with engineers on new or experimental designs with minimal existing information.
  11. Inspect own work, identify errors or defects, and report issues.
  12. Perform welding using various methods (oxygen, acetylene, electric, TIG, MIG, etc.) and join dissimilar metals, weld in all positions, including inside cylinders and tanks.
  13. Set, align, and weld intricate parts according to specifications, ensuring quality fusion and penetration.
  14. Conduct finishing operations such as grinding, buffing, polishing, hardening, and coating.

Job Requirements: Must have advanced mathematics skills, interpret complex drawings and specifications, and use precise measuring instruments. Equivalent to an accredited apprenticeship or high school plus 2-year technical college education, with over 5 years of effective experience. Candidates will undergo a government security investigation and must be U.S. citizens.

Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Days Off: Saturday, Sunday
