Job description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Substation Drafter for our Burnsville, MN office. Be involved in projects with our Power Delivery Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. A hybrid or in-office work setup is preferred to foster collaboration and mentorship, but remote work will be considered for candidates with proven experience.

Responsibilities

This role provides technical design and CAD support on substation projects. Key tasks include:

  • Generate accurate CADD designs, including plans, profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists.
  • Create physical and civil layout drawings, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, ensuring compliance with client standards.
  • Use AutoCAD or MicroStation for detailed substation drawings and layouts.
  • Follow standard practices for geometric dimensioning and tolerance, guaranteeing construction viability and compliance with code, state, and federal regulations.
  • Verify calculations, interpret contract plans and specifications, and raise issues for resolution as needed.
  • Work with cross‑functional teams to execute project work.
  • Prepare multiple design versions for review by engineers.
  • Engage with client and contractor personnel to coordinate design review.
  • Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant post‑education experience in a related discipline with drafting and design support experience.
  • Knowledge of drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculations involving geometry, mathematics, plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self‑leadership with attention to detail and task prioritization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Analytical mindset and sound judgment.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, and related tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and complying with WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Flexibility to work schedules beyond the typical workweek and occasional travel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
  • Professional licensure or certification.
Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $67,800 - $108,400.
