Job summary

TEXAS MACULA & RETINA PLLC is seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician to perform clinic-based patient work-ups, scribe for physicians, and assist with examinations and treatments. The role requires familiarity with retina terminology, EMR systems, and accurate data entry.

Candidates should have a High School diploma or higher and at least 3 years of experience, with strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and teamwork skills to deliver outstanding patient care in a fast-paced

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary work-up of patients in a clinic setting.
  • Scribe for physicians and assist with examination and treatment.
  • Prepare patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures.
  • Record accurate information in the EMR and enter data per guidelines.
  • Assist with ocular imaging and measurement of visual acuity and IOP.
  • Maintain rooms and stock supplies; support in clerical tasks as needed.

Ophthalmic Technician

We are looking for an experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join our team!

Ophthalmic Technicians use ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work-up of patients in a clinic setting, scribe for physicians, and may also directly assist Physician(s) with examination and treatment of patients.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Functions as a technician which requires knowledge and understanding of retina-specific ophthalmology terminology.
  • Requires proficient keyboarding skills, use of electronic medical record and image management system.
  • Utilize electronic mail and other instant messaging systems.
  • Skilled in ophthalmic terminology, ability to type words accurately with speed and knowledge of TRAM Electronic Medical Records system (Will train).
  • Prepares patients and rooms for treatments and minor procedures as directed by the physician.
  • Ability to obtain patient’s past and current medical and ophthalmic history including information regarding medications, allergies and family history of eye problems.
  • Identifies any potential patient concerns and brings these issues to the attention of the Practice Manager or physician as appropriate.
  • Ability to measure and record both distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity; performs preliminary refraction using objective equipment (will be trained).
  • Ability to measure intraocular pressures with a tonopen, checks pupillary response to light and pupillary defects (will be trained)
  • Performs basic visual field testing and patient education as directed by Physician (will be trained).
  • Prepares patients for treatments and minor procedures; measures and records vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate) as required.
  • Ability to record accurate information and enter data under the direction of the physician per regulatory and professional guidelines.
  • Instills eye drops as directed by the physician. Assists in the application of dressings, shields and eye patches.
  • Basic understanding of examination and procedure codes (ICD-10 codes) when inputting into the Electronic Medical Records system (will be trained).
  • Ensures that accurate procedure coding/charges for all procedures/drugs for all patients and correct diagnosis codes are used (will train).
  • Keeps examination, treatment, laser and any other assigned rooms cleaned and stocked with supplies, keeps drug count up to date.
  • Provides consistent, excellent customer service.
  • May consent patient for treatment and procedures.
  • Performs ocular imaging on patients with speed and accuracy and assists physician with treatments when needed.
  • Assists with patient transfers as necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, which may include assisting in other roles at Texas Macula & Retina: Duties assigned may include clerical functions such as filing, key boarding, scheduling patients, cleaning, stocking or other tasks as needed.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or higher.
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Strong attention to detail and expert keyboard (Scribe) skills.
  • Ability to understand and correctly spell medical terminology and numbers as percentages; analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with others (teamwork) and provide superior customer service to patients.
RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Technician Supervisor, Practice Manager and Physician owner.

Directly Supervises: Not applicable

Work Schedule

Varies, but typically Monday through Friday with working hours ranging from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Will require work 1-2 Saturdays a month,. . Work shift hours vary depending on employment status, but generally are 8 hours in length 5 days a week.
