Job description

ProStaff Workforce Solutions is seeking an Experienced Heavy Industrial Manual/CNC Machinist to work with a leading company in North Charleston, South Carolina. Contract-to-Hire Pay Rate: $20-35/hr Bonus upon conversion Shifts: 1st shift - 7 am - 3:30 pm plus OT 2nd shift - 3 pm - 11:30 pm plus OT If you have a passion for precision machining and are looking for a challenging and rewarding position, this may be the shop for you! Machinists set up and operate manual and CNC machines to confidently produce high-quality components with accuracy and efficiency. Machinists should be familiar with manually controlled machines and benchwork in the fabrication, maintenance, repair, and alteration of machinery, machine parts, tools, and equipment.

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions
  1. Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments
  2. Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints and follow instructions
  3. Machine parts out of metal
  4. Properly and safely select, align, secure, and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
  5. Recognize, deploy, and properly use inserts, fixtures, and tooling
  6. Must be able to determine the proper tools required to perform given task
  7. Operate and utilize lifting aids as necessary to perform work
  8. Use gauges and precision measuring instruments to meet tolerance requirements
  9. Perform daily, regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment
  10. Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner while maintaining a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  11. Work overtime as needed on evenings and/or weekends
  12. Communicate with others to coordinate work in plant
  13. Other duties as assigned
Preferred Machining Skills
  • Familiarity with the use of Heavy Duty Horizontal Lathes, Milling Machines, Horizontal Boring Mills, Vertical Turning Lathes, Planers, Grinders, Drill Presses, Hydraulic Presses, Band Saws, and Portable Tools
  • Turning, Drilling, Tapping, Boring, Honing, Polishing machine processes
  • Large part machining experience preferred (ship propeller shafting, ship steering gear, etc.)
  • In-place machining experience is desired
  • Forklift and Crane experience preferred
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5 to 10 years of related experience is preferred
  • Familiarity with Fanuc, Mazatrol, Okuma, DMG/Mori, and/or Heidenhain CNC controls
  • Basic understanding of G-Code and M-Code relative to CNC movement
  • Experience with maintaining 0.001" tolerances
  • Basic understanding of G, D, and T
  • Experience in job setup on vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers and CNC turning centers
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written
  • Ability and willingness to learn
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to interpret technical instructions
  • Interest in engineering and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read blueprints and use precision measuring tools
  • Basic mathematical skills and ability to apply concepts like fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Physical Demands
  • Ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane
  • Lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand, walk, reach overhead, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb ladders, and use stairs regularly
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, depth perception, and focus adjustment
  • Spend time using a computer

The work environment is characterized by moderate to high noise levels. The employee encounters typical manufacturing environment conditions while performing essential job functions.
