Job summary

Gorham Sand & Gravel Inc. is seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to join our earthwork construction team in Buxton, ME. You will operate excavators for site excavation, trenching, grading, loading, and backfilling, maintaining safety and efficiency on active projects.

The ideal candidate has strong machine control, can work to grade, and takes pride in safe, productive performance. A valid driver’s license and good communication are essential.

Qualifications

• Previous experience operating large excavators.
• Strong safety awareness and ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Operate excavators safely and efficiently for site excavation, trenching, grading, loading and backfilling.
• Use foot and hand controls to maneuver equipment, including tight spaces.
• Enter/exit cabs and climb access points to operate machinery.
• Perform daily pre-shift inspections of equipment and safety devices.
• Fuel, lubricate, and grease heavy equipment.
• Visually inspect equipment and report issues.
• Read site plans, grade stakes, blueprints, and supervisor instructions.
• Work around utilities and site infrastructure as required.
• Communicate effectively with foremen, truck drivers, laborers, and crew members.
• Maintain safe work practices and comply with safety requirements.
• Collaborate with others and improve operations and efficiency.
• Perform duties without posing risk to self or others.

Job Description

• Operate excavators safely and efficiently for excavation, trenching, grading, loading, and backfilling
• Use foot and hand controls to maneuver equipment, including in tight spaces as needed
• Enter and exit equipment cabs, including vehicles with elevated entry points, and climb ladders or steps to access machinery and work areas
• Perform daily pre-shift inspections of equipment, including safety devices, lights, horns, cooling systems, tires, and other components
• Fuel, lubricate, and grease heavy equipment
• Visually inspect equipment for mechanical defects and report concerns to the appropriate personnel
• Read and follow site plans, grade stakes, blueprints, and oral or written instructions from supervisors
• Work around utilities, trench boxes, shoring, pipes, and other site infrastructure as required
• Communicate effectively with foremen, truck drivers, laborers, and other crew members using voice, radio, and hand signals
• Maintain safe work practices and comply with all company and jobsite safety requirements
• Work cooperatively with other employees and the public
• Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve operations, reduce turnaround times, and streamline work processes
• Perform all duties in a manner that does not pose a direct threat to self or others

Requirements

• Previous experience operating large excavators
• Ability to work safely and follow instructions
• Ability to perform physical job duties in outdoor conditions
• Valid driver’s license
• Strong communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in heavy civil or earthwork construction
• Experience with GPS-guided equipment
