Job description

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking to fill a critical role for a full-time experienced background investigator near Fredericksburg, VA. Applicants must reside within 15 miles of the city center of Fredericksburg.

What you’ll do:

  • Travel daily when conducting in-person background investigations to determine employment suitability for positions requiring access to sensitive or classified U.S. Government information.
  • Schedule and conduct face-to-face interviews within your designated area, engaging with subjects, neighbors, employers, and friends.
  • Perform record searches at police agencies, courthouses, educational and financial institutions, and medical/mental health facilities.
  • Type and report all obtained information clearly and concisely using a government-issued computer system.
  • Work independently and as part of a team with a Field Manager.
  • Interact professionally, write extensively, meet attendance and punctuality expectations, and pay attention to details during fieldwork.
  • Maintain confidentiality, ethics, and integrity at all times.
  • Wear professional attire.
  • Be able to lift and move up to 10 pounds, climb stairs, walk extensively, endure long periods of standing, and drive in adverse or night conditions.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret eligible clearance; active federal background investigation with a T5 adjudication preferred.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of specialized Federal Background Investigative experience within the last five years, with investigator training compliant with National Training Standards.
  • 3 years of general experience (e.g., military, law enforcement, investigative functions) within the last 5 years, including completion of “New Investigator” training.
  • Valid driver's license and personal vehicle.
  • Sufficient motor vehicle insurance, specifics to be provided.
  • Willingness to travel locally and outside the primary work area as needed.
  • Home office setup required.
  • Reside within the specified mileage requirement.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment with limited supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, scheduling, and prioritization skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Intermediate typing speed (40+ WPM) and computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively for extended periods and accurately record information.
  • Proven metrics in quality, timeliness, and productivity.
  • Travel approximately 15-20% of the workweek, including occasional temporary duty assignments of 14-30 days several times per year.
