Job summary

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office seeks a seasoned Appellate Brief Writer to perform substantive legal research, drafting appellate briefs, and provide litigation support under the supervision of an Assistant District Attorney.

This role emphasizes independent management of research and writing, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to handle complex issues across appellate and post-conviction matters; a JD or NY Bar admission is not required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field
• Excellent analytical and persuasive writing skills
• Strong legal research and citation abilities
• Detail-oriented with superb organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple writing assignments and meet deadlines
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and legal research platforms such as Westlaw or Lexis

Responsibilities

• Draft appellate briefs, motions, memoranda and other substantive legal documents under supervision
• Assist with filing motions and briefs, proofreading, cite-checking, and tables of contents/ authorities
• Conduct legal and legislative history research using Westlaw and other resources
• Format and prepare documents for filing in accordance with court rules and bureau guidelines
• Maintain digital files and case tracking databases
• Coordinate aspects of federal habeas corpus litigation and moot court scheduling
• Provide litigation support for appellate, post-conviction, and related matters
• Fulfill defense requests for exhibits and assist with special projects
