Job summary

Unity Schools in Oakland is seeking a Middle School Expanded Learning Opportunity Program Tutor to support students academically. Responsibilities include facilitating study halls, supervising students, and leading extracurricular activities.

MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM TUTOR

Position Summary: Expanded Learning Opportunity Program Tutors are primarily responsible for supporting and guiding students academically and offering enrichments. The tutors are responsible for facilitating study halls, supervising middle school students, planning and facilitating engaging enrichments, and serving as academic guides for students.

Responsibilities
  • Meet regularly with Expanded Learning Opportunity Program Coordinator (1x per week)
  • Facilitate structured study halls
  • Plan and facilitate 1 hour-long extracurricular activity of their choice (ex: technology, art, dance)
  • Supervise students throughout the school: classrooms, courtyard, cafeteria
  • Perform general clean up and care for the school community: arranging furniture, returning computers to proper classrooms, vacuuming, wiping down furniture, returning computers to computer carts.
  • Participate in development sessions led by the Afterschool Program Coordinator
Ability to
  • Work and communicate effectively with adults and middle school students from diverse backgrounds
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff
  • Monitor and motivate students in the school setting: classrooms, courtyard, cafeteria
  • Assist with necessary parent meetings and community events if/when needed
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Respond to electronic communication (email) in a timely manner
  • Read and write English with sufficient comprehension to perform duties accurately and competently.
  • If/when needed, provide translation for student-led conferences or phone calls (if fluent in Spanish)
Expectations
  • Promptness: It is imperative that Tutors arrive to work on time. We are a small and mighty team that needs every team member present when expected.
  • Sign in upon arrival to the school site.
  • Sign out upon exiting the school site.
  • Restrict cell phone usage during work time to work-related communication
  • Professional conduct and language
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • In process of obtaining additional degree (AA, BA, BS or other professional certification)
Supervisors
  • Reports directly to Expanded Learning Opportunity Program Coordinator
  • Reports ultimately to the Co-Principals
Hours
  • M, Tu, Th, Fri: 2:30-5:30, Wed: 12-5:30
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 3 days per week, preferred all 5 days
  • Start date: Monday, August 10th, 2026 TBD
Compensation
  • Dependent on education credits (starts at $22/hr)
