Qualifications

  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and respect for historic properties and collections.
  • Can prioritize tasks and complete assignments within timeframes; can work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preservation and careful maintenance of aged and fragile historic objects and collections.
  • Maintain interiors of historic buildings, including windows, lanais, furnishings, exhibits, and collection areas.
  • Perform routine and specialized cleaning duties: dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, window washing, and more.
  • Polish and maintain historic silver, brass, and collection items using established procedures.
  • Assist with flower arranging and other traditional practices for authentic presentation of properties.
  • Follow cleaning schedules and preservation practices to protect interiors, furnishings, and artifacts.
  • Open/close designated buildings on tour days and prep spaces for visitors.
  • Provide monitoring and security for historic collections, buildings, grounds.
  • Contribute to welcoming, respectful visitor experiences.
  • Report any damage or concerns to Project Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Project Manager or Executive Director.

Job description

The Exhibit Conservator is directly supervised by the Project Manager and is responsible to the Executive Director. This position plays an important role in protecting the historic integrity of our sites while ensuring that buildings and exhibits are properly maintained and prepared for visitors.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preservation and careful maintenance of aged and fragile historic objects and collections.
  • Maintain the interiors of historic buildings, including windows, lanais, furnishings, exhibits, and collection areas.
  • Perform routine and specialized cleaning duties, including dusting, sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, window washing, and other interior maintenance.
  • Carefully polish and maintain historic silver, brass, and other appropriate collection items using established procedures.
  • Assist with flower arranging and other traditional practices that contribute to the authentic presentation of the historic properties.
  • Follow established cleaning schedules and preservation practices designed to protect historic interiors, furnishings, and artifacts.
  • Open and close designated buildings on tour days and help ensure spaces are properly prepared for visitors.
  • Provide additional monitoring and security for historic collections, buildings, and grounds.
  • Serve as an active part of the overall exhibit and visitor experience by helping maintain a welcoming, respectful, and historically appropriate environment.
  • Immediately report any damage, deterioration, maintenance concerns, or unusual conditions involving buildings or collection items to the Project Manager.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Project Manager or Executive Director.
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will be dependable, observant, respectful of historic environments, and comfortable performing detailed hands-on work.
  • Previous experience with interior cleaning, housekeeping, maintenance, museum work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to carefully follow established procedures when working around fragile and historically significant objects.
  • Strong attention to detail and respect for historic properties and collections.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and complete assigned tasks within established timeframes.
  • Ability to work independently while also working cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to receive direction and supervision appropriately.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds and perform physical tasks associated with cleaning and maintaining historic buildings.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality are required.
