Job Summary :

To provide patient- and family-centered care in both inpatient and outpatient settings that exemplifies best practices, fosters relationship-based care, and maintains the standards of professional exercise physiologists and nursing standards. Practice guidelines are based on the ANA code of ethics, professional conduct standards from the American Society of Exercise Physiologists, and regulatory agency standards, in collaboration with RNs and/or RTs.

Job Description

3 days per week, 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform non-invasive cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures under physician supervision after completing training and competency evaluation, including ECG, rhythm strip, heart monitor hookup, treadmill stress test, nuclear stress test, stress ECHO tests, and DOB echo and nuclear test.
  • Record short cardiopulmonary history relevant to testing or procedures by asking appropriate questions.
  • Maintain departmental statistical and individual productivity records.
  • Participate as part of the cardiac fast team for inpatient units.
  • Use clinical judgment considering patient age, diagnosis, and physical abilities.
  • Edit ECG and stress testing reports according to policy.
  • Interact directly with patients and physicians during receipt, review, scanning, and reporting of event recorders.
  • Promote a patient safety-focused environment.
  • Follow departmental, hospital, and HR policies and procedures.

1. Fiscal

  • Use time and resources judiciously, supporting leadership in scheduling and supply management to ensure quality and cost-effective care.
  • Provide accurate and timely documentation for patient charges.
  • Record initial and daily assessment data in patient records.
  • Assess patients pre-, during, and post-exercise, making appropriate referrals and recommendations.

2. Quality

  • Engage in continuous quality improvement activities, data collection, and organizational change.
  • Participate in the assessment and orientation of new participants, developing individualized care plans with team members.
  • Contribute expertise as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop comprehensive treatment strategies.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and observational skills to identify psychosocial issues and psychopathology.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on patient and program outcomes.

3. Patient Satisfaction

  • Work to improve patient satisfaction, collaborating with RNs to develop improvement strategies.
  • Apply health behavior change theories to assist participants in lifestyle modifications.
  • Assess modifiable risk factors and support patients in therapeutic lifestyle changes.
  • Use a relationship-based care model.

4. Patient Safety

  • Supervise exercise sessions, monitoring for adverse responses.
  • Apply exercise science knowledge to populations with cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
  • Develop and adjust exercise prescriptions based on patient responses and physician recommendations.
  • Report any significant changes or conditions immediately.
  • Follow safety and emergency protocols diligently.

5. Professional Growth

  • Recognize personal limitations, seek assistance, and pursue proficiency in core competencies.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives and share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Complete new hire orientation and ongoing education requirements.
  • Identify professional development needs and collaborate on learning opportunities.
  • Follow up on identified needs and implement correction plans.

6. Customer Service

  • Exemplify excellent patient and interprofessional relationships.
  • Provide a professional, quiet environment; be flexible with staffing and shifts.
  • Practice AIDET communication techniques.
  • Promote teamwork, approachability, and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Deliver holistic care to diverse patient populations.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a health-related field or Exercise Science.
  • Minimum one year of cardiology experience preferred if holding a health-related degree.
  • Area-specific required education (e.g., ACLS, BLS) may be obtained upon hire and must be maintained.

Licensure Preferred:

  • ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C)
  • ASEP Board Certified Exercise Physiologist (EPC)
