What you will do:

Medication Aides are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Prepares and administers prescribed medications as allowed under the regulatory board and/or state law;
  2. Ensures ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
  3. Promotes and is accountable for the safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
  4. Operates a variety of clinical equipment dictated by the type of equipment available in the assigned work unit;
  5. Informs supervisor of any violations of security or safety through the report writing process;
  6. Documents in an accurate and timely manner into the electronic health record;
  7. Preserves confidentiality;
  8. Adheres to infection control measures;
  9. Attends training programs as assigned, including successfully completing the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self-defense course.

This position may be required to work any shift, weekend, and/or holiday.

Qualifications:

  1. Possess high school diploma or equivalent;
  2. Successful completion of a state-approved Medication Aide program.

Required Competencies:

Knowledge of:
  1. the principles and techniques of patient care;
  2. corrections and medical policies and procedures;
  3. care and use of medical equipment and supplies.

Ability to:
  1. monitor patient behaviors, symptoms, and effects of medication;
  2. follow oral and written instructions;
  3. prepare and maintain records, charts, and reports;
  4. perform delegated tasks by physicians or licensed nurses;
  5. establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and staff.

Conditions of Employment:

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spray will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

  1. Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  2. Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  3. Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
  4. Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  5. Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  6. Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.

Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
