Position Overview

Weights and Measures inspectors protect both the buyers and sellers interests by providing equity in the marketplace.Being part of a team of 34 of inspectors, you would be performing the various inspections throughout the state of Illinois.In addition, you would investigate consumer complaints about shortages or unfair practices and educate the buyer andseller generally as to their rights provided by the Weights and Measures Act and Motor Fuel & Petroleum Standards Act.The Products and Standards team inspects 145,000 devices annually. Essential Functions

• Under general direction, organizes, plans, executes, evaluates and controls procedures for retail motor fuel dispenser and small-scale inspections.
• Serves as working supervisor.
• Interprets the Weights and Measures Act (225 ILCS 470) and the Motor Fuel Petroleum Act (225 ILCS 370) to Products and Standards Inspectors, office staff, registered servicepersons, attorneys, device owners, industry, the general public, and other interested parties.
• Communicates orally and in writing to device owners, industry, the general public, and other interested parties’ technical information, policies and testing procedures associated with the weights and measures programs.
• Reviews, develops, and maintains inspector procedure manual and training programs.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Specialized Skills

• Requires two (2) years of experience of Weights & Measures field inspections, rules, regulations, enforcement practices, standards, processes and/or procedures OR two (2) years of experience as a commercial weighing and measuring registered service technician to enhance consumer protection, foster fair competition, and facilitate economic growth and trade.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in business or public administration.
• Requires two years of responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefers two (2) years of experience of Weights & Measures inspections, rules, regulations, enforcement practices, standards, processes and/or procedures.
• Prefers two (2) years of experience as a commercial weighing & measuring device registered service technician to enhance consumer protection, foster fair competition, and facilitate economic growth and trade.
• Prefers extensive knowledge of the principals and practices of public and business administration.
• Prefers working knowledge of the functions of state government and of the character of relationships between the executive branch with the other branches, and between the State and higher and lower levels of government.
• Prefers two (2) years of working experience in developing and managing a supportive agency program.
• Prefers two (2) years of working experience with analyzing administrative problems and adopting an effective course of action.
• Prefers two (2) years of working experience with developing, installing and evaluating new and revised methods, procedures, and performance standards.
• Prefers two (2) years of working experience with exercising judgment and discretion in developing, implementing, and interpreting departmental policies and procedures.
• Prefers two (2) years of working experience with implementing policies and procedures.
• Prefers two (2) years of working experience with estimating and budgeting for future needs and cost of personnel, space, equipment, supplies and services.
