Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks an Associate Laboratory Director (ES&H) to provide strategic leadership across the ES&H Directorate for a 3,000‑employee, 5,000‑acre site in Upton, NY. You will drive safety culture, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement while aligning ES&H with the Laboratory’s mission and operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related technical discipline plus a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in progressively responsible positions, including 10 years of executive management/leadership experience.
• Significant leadership experience in environmental, safety, and health management within a complex scientific, technical, industrial, nuclear, or similarly regulated environment.
• Demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership for large, multidisciplinary technical organizations and successfully lead a diverse employee population.

Responsibilities

• Provide institutional leadership for environmental stewardship and worker safety and health programs across the Laboratory.
• Lead the ES&H Directorate with strategic direction and measurable safety performance targets.
• Partner with Laboratory and Directorate Leadership to implement institution‑wide ES&H strategies.
• Collaborate with other ALDs to ensure ES&H considerations are integrated into mission delivery.
• Ensure optimal deployment of ES&H services across the Laboratory.
• Manage organizational performance of a ~130-employee directorate with a $15–$20 million budget.
• Establish relationships with DOE, EPA, NYSDEC, and other authorities on ES&H matters.
• Lead organizational change and continuous improvement within ES&H programs.
