Job summary

UCLA invites applications for the Director of Publications for the James S. Coleman African Studies Center (ASC). The role oversees publication of the African Arts journal, Ufahamu, ASC newsletter and other Center works, reporting to ASC leadership within the UCLA International Institute.

Responsibilities include securing articles, editing, art direction, coordinating production, budgeting, and supervising staff and interns, while engaging with the broader academic community and publishers.

Qualifications

• Editing and writing skills with knowledge of editing conventions.
• Knowledge of formal academic writing conventions.
• Familiarity with Adobe CS publishing software and Photoshop.
• General knowledge of African art history or related field.
• Project management and ability to meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and with others.
• Experience with grant writing (Preferred).

Responsibilities

• Lead publication editing and production for African Arts journal and Ufahamu.
• Oversee editorial and pictorial material for journal issues.
• Coordinate with editors, printers, and distributors.
• Supervise student assistants and publishing staff.
• Develop proposals for new journals and publication initiatives.
• Represent ASC publishing to UCLA and international scholars.
