Job description

An incumbent to this position has complete responsibility for the implementation of the City of Buffalo’s Gun Violence Prevention program. She/he has full oversight of this initiative and in coordination with the Mayor, Buffalo Police Department, federal, state and local community agencies and stakeholders, ensures that the program pursues and incorporates evidence-based gun violence prevention strategies to reduce, combat and abate the causes and effects of gun violence on the local level.

  • Develops and implements evidence-based gun violence prevention strategies in coordination with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, New York State, Erie County, state and local law enforcement agencies, relevant departments of the City, and community groups and non-profit organizations;
  • Maintains and distributes resources to increase the awareness of and educate the general public about the availability of and process of requesting risk protection orders, how to report a lost or stolen firearm, assessing available mental health resources, safe and responsible gun ownership practices, and gun violence awareness campaigns;
  • Conducts community engagement sessions in an effort to gather and distribute information to assist in the development and implementation of gun violence prevention strategies;
  • Reviews City laws and policies and conducts research to identify areas of City services that may need change to improve gun violence presentation measures;
  • Initiates, develops, coordinates, or assists in the development and preparation of applications to solicit public or private grants, with the objectives of obtaining additional resources to promote effective gun violence prevention strategies and assistance for families and communities impacted by gun violence;
  • Researches grant opportunities from both public and private venues;
  • Assists in the development of, or develops, guidelines necessary for the administration of the grant funding, including grant application procedures, criteria for determining the amount and duration of grants, and reporting requirements for organizations that receive grants;
  • Collaborates with researchers, Police Department, Office of Citizens Services, and organizations that collect gun violence data to identify gaps in available data needed for gun violence prevention research; utilizes existing available research to enhance evidence-based gun violence prevention strategies;
  • Assists in coordinating the delivery of behavioral health resources, including but not limited to clinical interventions, crisis intervention, and group counseling supports, to families and communities impacted by gun violence;
  • Conducts and sponsors training events to inform the public of the impacts of gun violence and teach violence prevention and conflict resolution skills;
  • Creates and maintains an online, publicly available resource bank consisting of regularly updated and accurate materials, including data, research, and statistical information regarding gun violence in general and specific to the City of Buffalo;
  • Perform related work as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

(A) Completion of a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education in with specialization in Law Enforcement, Public Relations, Social Work, or a closely related field;
OR
(B) An equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to indicate the ability to perform the duties of the position as determined by the Commissioner of Human Resources.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Thorough knowledge of public policy specific to crime, gun violence, and prevention of crime/gun violence
  • Good knowledge of methods designed to curb crime and gun violence in city setting
  • Good knowledge of relevant information sources specific to crime, gun violence, and crime/violence prevention in general and specific to a city setting
  • Ability to develop and maintain evidence-based gun violence prevention strategies
  • Ability to work supervise
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency
  • Ability to collect, compile, comprehend, analyze and interpret written and statistical information
  • Physical ability commensurate with the demands of the position.
