Job description

The Executive Director of Student Leadership is a critical member of leadership team for the Office of the Dean of Students. The Leadership portfolio encompasses all the signature experiences for student leaders on campus, including student governance organizations, leadership coaching and workshops, volunteer and service-learning opportunities, leadership curriculum, and micro-credentialing. Additionally, this position oversees the direction of the campus-wide civil discourse campaign, Conversation Navigation, physical leadership development spaces on campus, and co-curricular partners with Academic Affairs, such as the comprehensive learner record.

The leadership portfolio has a robust staff, including 2 Directors and 1 Associate Director, as well as Assistant Directors, Coordinators, graduate staff, and student staff. Under the Executive Director’s leadership, this portfolio provides high-impact leadership development with the intent of student leaders influencing the culture at UT Austin for positive change.

Duties:

  • Oversee all leadership initiatives for the Office of the Dean of Students, including student governance organizations, volunteer and service-learning opportunities, Texas Leadership and Development (LEAD), the university-wide civil discourse campaign, and leadership curriculum within all involvement opportunities for students and student organizations.
  • Recruit, supervise, develop and evaluate staff in the leadership area, including direct supervision of the Director of Texas LEAD, Director of Volunteerism and Service-Learning, and Associate Director of Student Governance Organizations.
  • Provide oversight for student, departmental, and stakeholder engagement with Dean of Students leadership spaces, such as the Leadership Lab and Conversation Navigation Lab.
  • Coordinate the budget development and provide financial oversight for the Leadership portfolio. Steward development/grant funded programs, services, and resources. Provide leadership to enhance development and fundraising strategies.
  • Serve as a member of the department leadership. Lead special assignments within the University, Office of the Dean of Students, and the Division of Student Affairs. Participate on University committees representing the Office of the Dean of Students.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or a related field. At least 8 years of relevant experience. Experience supervising professional staff. Knowledge of federal and state laws, and University policy. Experience conducting planning and assessment activities. Excellent communication skills with the ability to acquire information/ideas from others. Ability to collaborate and share resources based on programmatic needs. Demonstrated ability to factor functional concerns/needs into strategy. Capability to delegate functional tasks to direct reports and engages others in achieving strategic initiatives. Experience managing a budget or advising on finances. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, administration, and external stakeholders. Possess effective facilitation skills, strong attention to detail, and have success managing concurrent tasks. Professional demeanor and ability to maintain sensitive information. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills including presentations, written correspondence, and reports. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

10 years or more experience in leadership development, curriculum development, student governance organizations, programming, and/or service-learning. Experience creating a vision and curriculum for leadership development. Experience advising student organizations. Experience at a large, public institution. Demonstrated work with and understanding of reputational and financial risks. Experience building partnerships and collaborating across departments. Experience supervising Associate Director or Director level staff. Proven ability to assess student learning outcomes qualitatively and quantitatively.
