Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Executive Director of Medical Services based in the United States.

The Executive Director of Medical Services will lead clinical operations across medical and psychiatry services within a dynamic, multistate virtual-care environment.

This senior, hands-on leadership role combines direct patient care, clinical team management, operational oversight, and strategic service-line development.

You will help ensure safe, timely, high-quality care while maintaining access, continuity, and consistent clinical standards across diverse student populations.

Working closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and cross-functional teams, you will oversee staffing, provider performance, scheduling, supervision, and clinical quality.

As a key clinical escalation point, you will collaborate with internal teams, clients, and campus stakeholders to address complex care concerns and support effective decision-making.

You will also use operational data and clinical insights to improve efficiency, strengthen care delivery, and guide enhancements to services and technology.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced physician leader who combines strong clinical judgment with a passion for innovation, team development, and accessible virtual healthcare.

Accountabilities
  • Direct Clinical Care: Dedicate approximately 50% of the role to direct patient care, maintaining an active clinical presence and supporting the quality and effectiveness of the care model.
  • Clinical Coverage and Continuity: Serve as the primary clinical backup, filling patient-care and scheduling gaps caused by planned or unexpected provider absences, fluctuating demand, and multistate coverage constraints.
  • Medical and Psychiatry Team Leadership: Lead and develop physician and nurse practitioner teams across Medical Services and Psychiatry, overseeing staffing, onboarding, engagement, performance management, quality, and accountability.
  • Scheduling and Resource Planning: Develop and maintain coverage models that protect patient access, ensure continuity of care, and make effective use of available clinical resources.
  • Supervision and Compliance: Plan and oversee completion of personal and team supervision requirements, including physician supervision agreements and state-specific documentation where applicable.
  • Clinical Escalation and Client Partnership: Act as the primary clinical escalation resource for Sales, Customer Experience, campus stakeholders, clients, and internal teams, addressing sensitive patient-care concerns and continuity-of-care issues.
  • Pre-Sale and Stakeholder Support: Contribute clinical expertise to prospective-client discussions, client concerns, quality matters, and other high-risk or complex escalations.
  • Service-Line Improvement: Implement practical improvements within the role’s decision-making authority, including provider incentive programs, care-efficiency initiatives, cost‑saving opportunities, and supervision capacity planning.
  • Cross-Functional Recommendations: Translate clinical and operational needs into actionable recommendations for Product, Operations, and executive leadership while respecting established decision-making responsibilities for product and budget changes.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Track relevant clinical and regulatory developments, communicate their implications, and serve as a clinical spokesperson for necessary changes to Medical Services.
  • Data-Driven Performance: Analyze wait times, patient access, licensure coverage, quality, utilization, and cost data to identify improvement opportunities and enhance clinical operations and patient experience.
Requirements
  • Medical Qualifications: Board-certified MD or DO with at least 10 years of clinical experience.
  • Progressive Leadership: At least 7 years of progressive leadership experience managing multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Physician Licensure: Active, unrestricted physician licenses in all 50 states and the District of Columbia are required. Candidates licensed in a substantial majority of jurisdictions may be considered if they have a credible, time‑bound plan to obtain the remaining licenses and can meet coverage requirements.
  • Telehealth Experience: At least 3 years of experience delivering care through telehealth or virtual-care services.
  • Multistate Clinical Operations: Demonstrated ability to lead a distributed clinical service line across multiple states while maintaining direct clinical practice.
  • Coverage Model Expertise: Experience developing and managing provider coverage and scheduling models that accommodate planned and unplanned absences, changing demand, and state‑specific licensure constraints.
  • Clinical Team Development: Experience leading physicians, advanced practice providers, or multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including performance management, quality oversight, provider development, and supervision planning.
  • Clinical Judgment and Communication: Strong decision‑making, communication, and relationship‑building skills, particularly when managing high‑stakes patient‑care concerns, client escalations, and cross‑functional challenges.
  • Operational and Analytical Skills: Experience using quality, access, wait‑time, utilization, licensure, and cost data to improve service delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to translate clinical requirements into practical recommendations for Product, Operations, Sales, Customer Experience, and executive leadership while operating within established decision‑making authority.
  • Healthcare Regulations and Administration: Familiarity with virtual-care delivery, state practice requirements, provider supervision obligations, and evolving healthcare regulations.
  • Policy and Process Development: Experience developing clinical policies and procedures that support quality, efficiency, evidence‑based decision‑making, measurable performance, and accountability.
Benefits
