Job description

Overview

Generation Citizen is seeking an Executive Director, Mid-Atlantic (MAR) to oversee the continued impact of the Mid-Atlantic region. MAR currently operates throughout New York State with a strong footprint in NYC, an emerging market in Philadelphia, and plans to expand in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The ED will serve as the face of GC in the region, building and developing key relationships with community partners, school districts, elected officials, philanthropic partners, and the media. They will lead and empower a local team, serve as the spokesperson for Generation Citizen across the region, and steer program and policy strategy in collaboration with the Board, school/district partners, coalition partners, and policymakers to achieve regional goals.

Location: NYC (Hybrid)

Key Responsibilities
  • Build strong relationships with existing donors and grow a diversified funding strategy to meet annual fundraising goals and enable sustained growth in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Strategically engage new individual, foundation, and corporate funding sources.
  • Partner with board chairs to effectively engage the Local Advisory Board and Associate Board (composed of young professionals) to support regional priorities, including program expansion, fundraising, and local advocacy efforts.
  • Provide fiscal oversight and manage the site’s budget.
Qualifications and Skills
  • 7+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience for education, democracy, or youth service organizations, with a track record of cultivating major donors and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Experience supervising, developing, and coaching others, with strong leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build or participate in coalitions with a clear policy objective.
  • Strong knowledge of the philanthropic, education, and policy landscape in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with an established network of relationships with local philanthropists, elected officials, and educators.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with strong project management skills and the ability to deliver results individually and with teams.
  • Empathetic leadership, relationship-building, and a collaborative mindset with ownership over outcomes.
  • Skilled in strengths-based storytelling, focusing on elevating youth voices and inspiring others.
  • Deep commitment to Generation Citizen’s mission and a track record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in policy, advocacy, and fundraising.
  • Based in the region with ability to travel to coworking offices in the New York area and attend funder meetings and events across the Mid-Atlantic region.
Note

This position works primarily remotely but requires travel up to 30% of the time for in-person team days, retreats, events, partner meetings, board meetings, conferences, lobbying, and other activities. In-person opportunities include annual staff retreats, funder meetings, school visits, and region-based Civics Day events. Overnight travel may be required.
