Executive Director – Leadership Development & Enterprise Capability Building

At Cummins, leadership capability is a strategic advantage that enables our people, teams, and business to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and complex environment.

As the steward of Cummins' Leadership Development Architecture, you will establish the frameworks, experiences, and standards that build the leadership capabilities required to advance our Mission, Values & Promise along with our long-term business strategy.

Leading a global team of development experts, you will create an integrated leadership ecosystem that connects executive development, leadership capability building, coaching, and talent growth across all levels of the organization. You will partner closely with senior business leaders, HR stakeholders, external thought leaders, and executive leadership, including CEO Jen Rumsey, to strengthen Cummins' leadership bench, accelerate readiness for future challenges, and sustain Jen’s leadership legacy that will drive the company's continued success.

This highly visible leadership role requires strategic vision, enterprise influence, and deep expertise in leadership development. Success will be measured by your ability to build leadership capability at scale, foster inclusive and high-performing leadership cultures, and deliver measurable business impact through a world-class leadership development architecture.

Based in Indianapolis or Columbus, Indiana, this onsite-with-flexibility role is intentionally designed to enable meaningful face-to-face engagement, collaboration, and coaching with senior leaders and stakeholders across the enterprise. Relocation assistance is available.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
  • Define and lead Cummins’ enterprise leadership development strategy and Leadership Development Architecture (LDA), ensuring leadership capabilities enable business objectives, workforce evolution, and enterprise transformation.
  • Build leadership capability across all employee and leader populations by creating connected development pathways, experiences, and tools that support growth throughout key career and leadership transitions.
  • Lead the identification, prioritization, development, and measurement of critical leadership capabilities that strengthen organizational performance, succession readiness, and long‑term business success.
  • Direct the executive development portfolio, integrating coaching, assessments, sponsorship, mentoring, enterprise exposure, and experiential learning to accelerate senior leadership readiness and effectiveness.
  • Establish enterprise standards, methodologies, quality expectations, and governance practices that elevate the consistency, effectiveness, and impact of leadership development globally.
  • Partner across HR and business functions to ensure leadership development is integrated with talent management, organizational effectiveness, workforce planning, succession management, and employee experience strategies.
  • Leverage external research, leadership trends, learning science, leadership analytics, and responsible AI‑enabled solutions to drive innovation and continuously improve leadership outcomes.
  • Build and lead a high‑performing global team while fostering inclusive leadership practices, equitable access to development opportunities, measurable business impact, and a culture of continuous learning and growth.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
  • Proven experience designing, leading, and evolving enterprise‑wide leadership development strategies, architectures, and capability‑building systems within large, complex, matrixed global organizations.
  • Deep expertise in leadership development, executive development, learning science, coaching, assessment, talent management, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Ability to translate business strategy and future workforce needs into leadership capability frameworks, development pathways, scalable experiences, and measurable organizational outcomes.
  • Executive presence and strategic consulting skills that enable influence and credibility with senior executives, officers, board members, HR leaders, and cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Strong enterprise and systems‑thinking capabilities with the ability to connect business priorities, talent strategies, leadership development, and organizational outcomes.
  • Experience building and leading high‑performing global teams of leadership development experts, facilitators, coaches, consultants, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated success leading through complexity, organizational change, and competing stakeholder priorities while driving enterprise alignment and adoption.
  • Strong analytical and business acumen with the ability to leverage data, talent insights, and evidence‑based decision‑making to evaluate impact and inform strategic investments.
  • Experience leveraging modern learning technologies, digital platforms, and responsible AI solutions to enhance leadership development effectiveness, accessibility, and scalability.
  • Passion for fostering inclusive, high‑performing leadership cultures that enable innovation, continuous learning, collaboration, and long‑term business success.
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Industrial‑Organizational Psychology, Business, Organizational Development, Learning & Development, or a related field required.
  • Advanced degree (Master's, MBA, Ed.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading the design, implementation, governance, and continuous evolution of an enterprise‑wide leadership development architecture, framework, or comparable capability‑building system.
  • Significant leadership experience directing enterprise leadership development, executive development, organizational development, learning, or talent management functions within complex global organizations.
  • Proven ability to translate business strategy, future workforce requirements, and leadership expectations into scalable leadership pathways, experiences, standards, and measurable outcomes.
  • Extensive experience advising senior executives, HR leaders, and business stakeholders while leading enterprise‑wide leadership capability and executive development initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams of leadership development experts and integrating coaching, assessments, executive education, sponsorship, learning science, and leadership analytics into comprehensive talent strategies.
