Job summary

The University of Louisville seeks an Executive Director of Environmental Health and Safety to lead DEHS enterprise-wide, aligning governance with research, teaching, clinical and administrative priorities.

Reporting to the AVP EVPRI, this role establishes strategy, risk controls, and performance standards, overseeing biosafety, radiation, chemical, and occupational safety, and partnering with deans, facilities, and external agencies to protect people and university assets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field and 10 years of relevant experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
• Leadership of enterprise-wide EHS programs.
• Experience with regulatory compliance and risk management.
• Ability to engage with senior leadership and external agencies.

Responsibilities

• Provide enterprise-wide leadership for DEHS aligned with university priorities.
• Serve as institutional authority to the AVP and EVPRI on EHS risks and compliance.
• Establish governance framework, internal controls, and accountability.
• Oversee lab safety, biosafety, radiation, chemical, occupational safety and waste management.
• Lead institutional committees and regulated research-safety processes.
• Represent University with regulatory agencies and external partners.
• Direct supervision of DEHS personnel and resource stewardship.
• Ensure preparedness and continuity for significant EHS events.
