Job summary

The Grand Rapids Symphony seeks a Director of Operations to oversee concert production, scheduling, budgets, contracts, and venue coordination, ensuring top-quality performances and consistent professional standards.

This full-time, exempt role reports to the SVP/GM, collaborates with the Music Director and guest artists, leads the Production Stage Manager and Artistic Operations Manager, and provides backup payroll support in line with the Master Agreement.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in orchestra operations, production, or closely related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of orchestral operations, and a musical background is expected.
  • Highly organized with high standards for quality and impeccable attention to detail.
  • Resourceful team player with problem solving ability and strong written and verbal communication skills; must multi-task under pressure.
  • Ability to interact constructively with conductors, musicians, staff, vendors, stage crew and others.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and OPAS is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day aspects of concert execution for all events on the Orchestra’s calendar.
  • Work with GRS Music Director and artistic leaders on details of concert production and logistics to ensure performances are executed to the highest standard.
  • Develop and manage the symphony’s master calendar in collaboration with SVP/GM and Artistic leadership, in line with collective bargaining agreements and contracts.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day contact with performance venues for scheduling, operations, and production, coordinating with venue staff.
  • Advance shows and delegate responsibilities across the department to successfully complete each performance.
  • For outdoor events, monitor weather, coordinate emergency personnel, and ensure safety of all involved.
  • Establish a rotating schedule of concert 'Manager on Duty' assignments and serve as MOD when in rotation.
