Job summary

LandWatch is seeking an Executive Director in Monterey County to lead policy, fundraising, and organizational management. Reporting to the Board, you will guide strategy, oversee finances, and represent the organization to officials, donors, and the public.

The ideal candidate will have nonprofit leadership experience, strong policy expertise in housing, climate, and land use, and the ability to build partnerships with diverse communities across Monterey County.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading or managing a nonprofit or mission‑driven organization.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising, including major donors and institutional funders.
• Strong written and oral communication skills with diverse audiences.
• Ability to work with a Board, staff, and external partners to advance policy goals.
• Experience with California land use, housing, climate, and environmental law is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead fundraising strategy and execution across major gifts, foundations, and events.
• Set policy strategy and priorities across land use, housing, climate, water, and conservation.
• Oversee operations, budgeting, and financial controls.
• Represent LandWatch with elected officials, agencies, media, donors, and the public.
• Hire, supervise, and develop staff and consultants to support priorities.
• Foster collaboration with coalition partners and community stakeholders.
