Job summary

Child Development Resources in Williamsburg, VA is seeking an experienced Director of Children’s Services to lead a comprehensive portfolio including early childhood, early intervention, family support, home visiting, prevention, and community-based programs.

This executive role connects strategy with day-to-day operations, ensuring programs have leadership, resources, and partnerships to deliver exceptional services while maintaining compliance and fiscal stewardship.

Qualifications

  • At least eight years of progressively responsible experience in early childhood, early intervention, Head Start/Early Head Start, home visiting, family support, child care, public or nonprofit human services, or a related field.
  • At least five years of significant supervisory and management responsibility, including experience leading managers or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets, grants, contracts, compliance systems, and multiple funding streams.
  • Substantial experience with grant writing, program development, strategic planning, and external partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership for the planning, development, integration, improvement, and expansion of Children’s Services programs.
  • Translate mission and priorities into clear goals, operating plans, measurable outcomes, and sustainable service models.
  • Identify emerging community needs, policy changes, funding opportunities, and operational risks.
  • Advise leadership on program performance, workforce needs, compliance, fiscal conditions, capacity, and strategic opportunities.
  • Lead with transparency, sound judgment, cultural humility, and attention to staff and families.
  • Ensure programs operate in accordance with applicable requirements and maintain compliance.
  • Strengthen systems connecting referral, enrollment, assessment, service delivery, transition, and follow-up.
  • Maintain executive oversight of program policies, procedures, internal controls, documentation standards, health and safety, and risk management.
  • Prepare for monitoring visits, licensing inspections, audits, funder evaluations, and external reviews.
  • Promote data-informed decision-making, program evaluation, and Continuous Quality Improvement.
  • Identify and evaluate funding opportunities and foster partnerships with funders and community organizations.
  • Develop productive relationships with funders, grant officers, and educational/healthcare institutions.
  • Prepare clear information for the Board and governing bodies; communicate complex information clearly and actionably.
  • Lead governance communication on performance, compliance, and strategic considerations.
