Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking an Executive Director of AI Engineering and EHR Systems to lead the design, deployment, and operation of enterprise AI and advanced analytics across the health system. Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, deployment, and operation of enterprise AI platforms for ML, generative AI, agentic AI, and advanced analytics.
• Establish scalable AI infrastructure, APIs, and reusable services to accelerate delivery.
• Define AI engineering standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines.
• Set up operational processes, monitoring, and support models for production AI systems.
• Lead incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement for AI platforms.
• Establish controls for model evaluation, validation, monitoring, explainability, governance, and risk management.
• Manage relationships with AI vendors, cloud providers, and strategic partners.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and investments aligned with priorities.
• Ensure AI solutions integrate with enterprise apps, data platforms, and clinical workflows.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and career development for managers and engineers.
• Oversee Epic EHR backend systems and integration engines.

The Executive Director, AI Engineering and EHR Systems provides strategic and operational leadership for the design, development, deployment, and support of enterprise artificial intelligence solutions across Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH). This role is responsible for AI platforms, machine learning solutions, data pipelines, and critical healthcare technology environments, including Epic EHR backend systems and integration platforms.

Working closely with clinical, operational, digital health, software engineering, data and analytics, cybersecurity, and infrastructure teams, the Executive Director defines the technical vision, architecture, and engineering practices required to operationalize AI at scale across the enterprise.

The role is also accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring the responsible, secure, and compliant implementation of AI solutions, and driving the successful delivery and adoption of AI initiatives from concept through enterprise-wide deployment.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

• Lead the design, development, deployment, and operation of enterprise AI platforms supporting machine learning, generative AI, agentic AI, and advanced analytics use cases.

• Establish scalable AI infrastructure, development frameworks, APIs, and reusable services to accelerate solution delivery and adoption.

• Define and implement AI engineering standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines to ensure scalability, security, reliability, and maintainability.

• Establish operational processes, monitoring, observability, and support models for production of AI systems.

• Lead incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives for AI platforms and services.

• Establish controls and processes for model evaluation, validation, monitoring, explainability, governance, and risk management.

• Manage relationships with AI technology vendors, cloud providers, strategic partners, and key stakeholders.

• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and recommend investments and innovation opportunities that align with organizational priorities and strategic objectives.

• Ensure AI solutions are effectively integrated with enterprise applications, data platforms, and clinical workflows.

• Provide leadership, coaching, performance management, and career development for managers, engineers, and technical staff.

• Oversee the operation, performance, and reliability of Epic EHR backend systems and integration engines.

• Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure AI adoption, effectiveness, reliability, operational efficiency, and return on investment (ROI).

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A bachelor's degree is required.

2. 15+ years related work experience required and 8 to 10 years supervisory/management experience required.

3. Proven experience leading the strategy, development, deployment, and operations of enterprise AI and machine learning solutions, including generative AI and advanced analytics platforms.

4. Demonstrated experience managing Epic EHR backend systems and InterSystems HealthConnect (or equivalent integration engines), including large-scale healthcare data integration and interface management.

5. Extensive experience operating within a complex healthcare environment, with strong understanding of clinical workflows, regulatory requirements, data governance, and patient safety considerations.

Pay Range:

$220,000.00 USD - $275,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geographyof work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
