Job description

Application Deadline: This recruitment will remain open through Friday, September 18, 2026 at 5:00 PM. Applications must be submitted by the deadline to be considered.

One SAFE Place seeks an Executive Director: a mission-driven leader and skilled collaborator to steward our organization into its next chapter. You will inherit a prepared foundation: a stabilized organization with strengthened operations, a dedicated team grounded in trauma-informed practice, newly implemented systems and infrastructure, and an engaged leadership team committed to your success.

One SAFE Place has invested deeply in organizational health: we have built administrative capacity, refined our service delivery model, and created clarity around governance and strategic direction. This is not a crisis turnaround role; this is an opportunity to lead a survivor-centered organization that is ready to grow, deepen impact, and sustain excellence.

As Executive Director, you will report directly to the Board of Directors and hold overall responsibility for strategic direction, operational excellence, financial health, and community integration of our comprehensive service continuum, emergency shelter, client intake, transitional housing, 24-hour crisis hotline, and legal services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and human trafficking. You will translate organizational vision into measurable outcomes, cultivate the partnerships and funding streams essential for sustainability, and foster a culture where both staff and survivors know they belong and matter. You will not do this alone: you will work alongside a capable leadership team, an engaged board, and a partner organization (Children's Legacy Center) invested in your success.

Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Program Performance
  • In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop, implement, and continuously refine a multi-year strategic plan for One SAFE Place, informed by emerging trends and service gaps in survivor services and aligned with organizational mission and goals
  • Establish, track, and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) across all programs; use data to drive decision-making
Board Governance & Relations
  • Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors: support board meetings and committee work, and provide timely, transparent reporting on finances, programs, outcomes, personnel, and risk
  • Partner with the board in governance, strategic planning, and board development, and support onboarding of new board members
Fund Development & Financial Stewardship
  • Along with your team, help lead fundraising and revenue development across local, state, and federal funding streams, including identifying, cultivating, and stewarding grants, donors, and strategic partnerships, and participating in fundraising events
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the annual organizational budget in coordination with the Finance team
  • Serve as the Authorized Representative for all One SAFE Place grants; execute grant subawards, amendments, and related documents (including Cal OES subawards) as authorized by the Board of Directors; and ensure compliance with all funder requirements, reporting deadlines, and audit obligations
Program Operations & Compliance
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of all One SAFE Place programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, accreditation standards, internal policies, and appropriate staffing levels
  • Develop, implement, and regularly evaluate policies and procedures that promote client safety, trauma-informed practice, and staff well-being
  • Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of all program records, including client files and statistical data required for audits and fidelity reviews
  • Oversee facilities, safety, and risk management across all sites, maintaining the confidentiality and security of shelter and program locations
Staff Leadership & Organizational Culture
  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance evaluations for leadership staff; recruit, onboard, and retain a high-performing, mission-aligned team
  • Foster a team culture grounded in psychological safety, accountability, and continuous learning through regular staff meetings and professional development in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention best practices
Community Engagement & Representation
  • Serve as the primary organizational representative and relationship-builder with community partners, including law enforcement, healthcare providers, legal systems, schools, and faith communities, and on coalitions, task forces, and advisory bodies at the local, regional, and state levels
  • Design and lead outreach and community education initiatives that raise awareness of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and human trafficking, positioning One SAFE Place as a trusted community resource
Children's Legacy Center Partnership
  • Work collaboratively with Children's Legacy Center, ensuring shared services support One SAFE Place's mission while maintaining its independent governance and legal status
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated executive presence with the ability to steward and support staff, engage and partner with a governing board, and represent the organization credibly in public and professional settings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a clear, steady public communicator
  • Strong fiscal literacy and experience managing multi-source organizational budgets
  • Strategic thinker able to cast long-term vision, bring sustainable innovation to areas of need, and manage near-term operational demands
  • Deep knowledge of trauma-informed, survivor-centered service models and best practices in the fields of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and/or human trafficking, or demonstrated commitment to learning the field deeply
  • High emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and steadiness under pressure; open to being mentored and coached, and committed to mentoring others
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, Nonprofit Management, or a related field preferred; candidates with equivalent professional experience in lieu of a degree will also be considered
  • Master's degree in one of the above fields preferred, but not required
  • Experience with government grants and contracts (Cal OES, HUD, VOCA, or similar) strongly preferred
  • Completion of the California state-mandated Domestic Violence (40-hour) and Sexual Assault (65-hour) Crisis Counselor Trainings within an agreed period after hire, if not already completed
