Job summary

The Stanford Center on Longevity at Stanford University is seeking a Deputy Director to lead strategic direction, manage staff, and advance research and programs. The Deputy Director will work with the Director and partners across the United States and globally to ensure impactful outcomes.

This hybrid role requires strong leadership, financial management, and grants/contracts experience, with responsibilities spanning budgeting, policy interpretation, and institutional collaboration to extend

• Bachelor’s degree required.

Responsibilities

• Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization and the day-to-day operations.
• May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.
• Develop business plans and infrastructure to support research and teaching. Provide analysis and review of multi-year plans, including providing alternative methods for achieving goals when necessary.
• Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university academic and administrative policies and procedures within an operating unit.
• Oversee and/or manage the finances across all sources for the annual budget cycle, including developing, monitoring, analyzing forecasting and reporting.
• Manage and coordinate grants and contracts for the department. Ensure compliance with institutional and external requirements.
• Represent the unit’s business and academic operations within the organization. May represent the organization to external constituencies.

Longer lives are, at once, among the most remarkable achievements in all of human history and the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Whereas most discussions about aging societies are premised on the assumption that older people are frail and infirm, our premise is that problems of older people demand solutions so that the substantial increase in life expectancy can ultimately benefit individuals and societies. The mission of the Stanford Center on Longevity is to accelerate and implement scientific discoveries, technological advances, behavioral practices, and social norms so that century long lives are healthy and rewarding.

We are a center on longevity, not old age, because building a world where the majority of people thrive in old age requires attention to the entire life span. Research shows clearly that education, exercise, nutritional habits, financial decisions, and social choices early in life have substantial implications for quality of life at advanced ages. Increased longevity demands that we reconsider traditional models of the life course which will necessitate new norms and practices for education, work and families that span multiple generations.

To inspire change on a grand scale, the Center works with more than 150 Stanford faculty, their students and research staffs, as well as leaders from industries that are poised to distribute innovative products and services to the public, thought leaders who help to shape the ideas that influence cultural change, and policy makers who target important challenges and opportunities for long lived societies.

Position Summary

The Stanford Center on Longevity is seeking a Deputy Director to join our team in working to build a world where everyone thrives in older ages. They will work with the Director to set the strategic direction of the Center and manage staff to achieve the research and programmatic goals and objectives of the Center. They will represent the Center to other units within Stanford and key corporate and academic partners across the United States and globally.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

• Master’s degree in business administration
• Experience working in the private sector in companies doing work related to healthy aging.
• Experience in development for supporting new products or research initiatives.
• Experience in research or private sector work in healthy aging.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

• Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization and the day-to-day operations. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
• May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.
• Develop business plans and infrastructure to support research and teaching. Provide analysis and review of multi-year plans, including providing alternative methods for achieving goals when necessary. Influence faculty leadership on specific recommendations for current operation and for future development of the organization and lead process improvement.
• Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university academic and administrative policies and procedures within an operating unit. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures.
• Oversee and/or manage the finances across all sources for the annual budget cycle, including developing, monitoring, analyzing forecasting and reporting.
• Manage and coordinate grants and contracts for the department. Ensure compliance with institutional and external requirements.
• Represent the unit’s business and academic operations within the organization. May represent the organization to external constituencies.

Minimum Education

five years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
