Position Overview

The Brennan Center seeks an individual with excellent writing skills, a strong grasp of current events and public policy, and a keen sense of messaging to provide strategic assistance to the President & CEO of the Brennan Center and the Brennan Center’s Managing Director. The Executive Communications Strategist will work closely on all aspects of internal and external communications, managing projects, providing research, writing, and messaging support.

Location: In‑person position based in New York City, with occasional travel to Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities
  • Produce public writing for the President, including the weekly newsletter “The Briefing,” op‑eds, tweet threads, etc.
  • Serve as associate producer of The Briefing weekly podcast, conducting research, booking guests, drafting questions and scripts, and maintaining an editorial calendar.
  • Draft and edit internal communications, including talking points and staff updates.
  • Research, edit, and write for books, articles, speeches, and reports.
  • Write bylined work and Brennan Center reports.
  • Draft weekly emails to staff and board, weaving updates from all programs.
  • Strategize messaging and draft talking points for external use by the President and other leaders.
  • Enhance the President’s media presence through relationship building with producers, publications, and radio programs/podcasts.
  • Assist the Managing Director with planning, programmatic, and communications work.
  • Plan monthly events series in Washington, D.C., for lawmakers, journalists, and others.
  • Produce memos for meetings with lawmakers, journalists, donors, and others.
  • Provide content, scripts, and questions for panel discussions at Office of the President events.
  • Hire and supervise interns for the Office of the President.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2–5 years of experience in politics, government, journalism, communications, or a nonprofit.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex legal and policy work into clear language.
  • High‑level speechwriting experience a plus.
  • Strong political and public communications strategic sense.
  • Ability to work constructively across multiple issue areas and under deadline pressure.
  • Experience managing multi‑stakeholder communications efforts.
  • Understanding of the Brennan Center’s policy and legal goals, activities, and strategies.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑energy environment, juggling tight timelines.
  • Team player with mature interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and polished work product.
  • High degree of integrity, discretion, and tact.
  • Willingness to work overtime to meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to the Brennan Center’s mission and goals.
Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $75,000–$100,000.
