A Brief Overview

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford Medicine is a world-class healthcare system committed to healing humanity through science and compassion. The Planning, Design + Construction (PD+C) department manages and delivers capital projects, including new clinics, renovations, and hospital expansions, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and on schedule.

Stanford Medicine's PD+C department supports multiple entities, including Stanford Healthcare, Lucile Packard Children's Health, and others, across a variety of healthcare facilities and service lines, including trauma centers and research hospitals, spread over seven million square feet.

The department is seeking an Executive Director of Design and Construction to lead and strategize the department’s work, overseeing project execution, team management, and stakeholder engagement within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

What you will do
  • Develop and oversee strategic direction, goals, budgets, and processes for PD+C projects in collaboration with senior management.
  • Lead a team of approximately seven Directors and related teams across multiple regions.
  • Manage departmental frameworks, compliance, reporting, and stakeholder relationships, including regulatory agencies and community partners.
  • Ensure projects adhere to legal, safety, and sustainability standards, and develop customer service initiatives.
  • Support campus planning, project management, and organizational goals, including performance metrics and contract negotiations.
  • Participate in campus disaster preparedness and oversee reporting dashboards.
  • Manage contracts, vendor relationships, and benchmarking systems to improve project cost forecasting.
  • Communicate policies, processes, and project updates to stakeholders and participate in management meetings.
  • Support the implementation of information systems and ensure master schedules are accurate and integrated.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, ensuring compliance with all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, architecture, health, public administration, business management, or related field.
  • Master’s degree and/or professional licensure in related fields are strongly encouraged.
Experience Qualifications
  • Minimum of 15 years of related experience with progressive responsibility, including 5 years supervisory, or
  • 10 years of experience with a Master’s degree, including 3 years supervisory.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Financial management, relationship building, project evaluation, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, project management tools, and organizational principles.
