IAT Insurance Group is seeking an Excess Casualty Wholesale Underwriter for the Central US region, with hybrid work flexibility and occasional travel. The role emphasizes profitable underwriting, broker relationship management, and market knowledge to support wholesale partners.

Ideal candidates bring eight+ years in excess casualty and strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills. Remote work options may be considered for highly qualified applicants.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least eight years of relevant experience or the equivalent.
  • Equivalent experience is considered twelve years of relevant commercial insurance experience.
  • Knowledge of Excess and Surplus is required.
  • Ability to apply loss development and advanced loss analysis concepts for optimal pricing.
  • Ability to creatively utilize coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance on individual risks to achieve company objectives.
  • Agency management experience mandatory.
  • Strong math aptitude, excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills.
  • Computer literacy: various programs, internet-based programs, PC, spreadsheets.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. and not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and produce profitable business within the authority granted and consistent with company goals.
  • Maintain agency relationships; develop new relationships and recognize when to cease relationships, contributing where possible to amicable resolutions.
  • Adhere to company underwriting guidelines, processes, tools, authority grants, and regulatory/compliance requirements.
  • Examine information such as insurance applications, websites, inspection reports, loss information, financial data, and third‑party data to evaluate risk/reward decisions.
  • Effectively express information and ideas clearly through spoken, written, and electronic means.
  • Demonstrate and communicate an understanding of products and services.
  • Provide prompt and courteous responses to internal and external customers.
  • Engage with distribution to market capabilities, benefits, and features, and identify new opportunities.
  • Leverage metrics and data to improve territory performance.
  • Understand market/industry issues, trends, and competitors.
  • Perform other tasks as needed.

Job description

Position Summary

We are excited to announce that the Excess Casualty Market team within IAT Insurance Group has an immediate opening for an Excess Casualty Wholesale Underwriter.

Successful candidates will provide the right balance of speed to market coupled with coverage and pricing expertise on excess casualty when working with our wholesale partners.

Priority consideration is given to individuals with a proven and profitable track record with wholesale brokers building a book of middle‑market accounts (over $40,000) with low frequency and moderate severity exposures. Eight years’ experience or more is preferred.

This position can work from IAT’s Office in the Central US. Other IAT locations, including remote, can be considered for highly qualified candidates. The hybrid schedule reflects our values (thinking and acting like an owner, collaboration, and teamwork) as it requires working from the office with colleagues and other disciplines Monday through Wednesday, with the option of working remotely on Thursday and Friday. Occasional travel is required. Preferred IAT locations include Naperville, Illinois; Rolling Meadows, Illinois; Overland Park, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; Spring, Texas; Plano, Texas.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Wholesale surplus lines experience.
  • CPCU, ARM, or AU industry designations.
  • INS21, 22, and 23 or equivalent.
  • Eight or more years of experience in commercial insurance.
Compensation

The annual gross salary range for this role is $72,560 – $157,950. Actual salaries will vary based on qualifications, skills, competencies, and geographical location. Total compensation includes base salary, performance‑based bonus opportunities, 401(k) match, profit‑sharing opportunities, and more.
