REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Instructional Time
    • The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Student Behavior
    • Establishes a set of rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, student verbal participation, and movement during different instructional activities; frequently monitors behavior and stops inappropriate behavior promptly and with dignity.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Presentation
    • Begins with a review of previous materials; presents the lesson with clear objectives; speaks fluently and uses understandable language; provides relevant examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks with a high rate of success; asks appropriate questions; maintains a brisk pace and smooth transitions; ensures the assignment is clear; summarizes the main points at the end.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    • Maintains clear work standards and due dates; circulates to check student performance; uses various work products to assess progress; asks questions clearly and one at a time.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Feedback
    • Provides feedback on in-class correctness to encourage growth; gives prompt feedback on out-of-class work; affirms correct responses and moves on; provides sustaining feedback after incorrect or no response with prompting or time.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Facilitating Instruction
    • Instructional plan aligns with school and system goals; uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives; maintains records of student performance; uses available resources to support instruction.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    • Treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION: Performing Non-Instructional Duties
    • Performs non-instructional duties as assigned; adheres to laws, policies, rules, and regulations; pursues professional development and growth.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, and equipment for children with special needs. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Standing/walking; light work as applicable.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge data or observations against standards.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and convey information; receive instructions and directions from superiors.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare correspondence and instructional materials using prescribed formats.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply logical thinking, interpret technical instructions, and handle abstract and concrete variables.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to explain procedures and follow instructions; communicate in professional language.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic and understand statistics.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes for office tasks.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle a variety of items; basic eye/hand coordination.
