BRIDGETON ELEMENTARY in New Bern, North Carolina seeks an Exceptional Children's Personal Needs Assistant / Bus Monitor to support an assigned student during the instructional day and assist with transportation as needed.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED. You will work with teachers to provide instruction, monitor behavior, collect progress data, and help with feeding, toileting and classroom tasks. This 10‑month, 55 pay grade, non‑exempt position is full‑time.

  • Keeps student on task and reinforces achievement.

Position: Exceptional Children's Personal Needs Assistant / Bus Monitor
Reports to: Director of Accountabiliyt and Exceptional Children/Principal

Terms of Employment: 10 months, Annual position

Pay Grade: 55
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Nature of Work

An employee with this job description provides support to a specific assigned student during the instructional day. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the student and teacher in the teaching-learning process for the assigned student. Problems are solved through the exercise of judgment in selecting the best course of action to be taken.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
  • Serves a helper/caregiver to accommodate the comfort/needs of the assigned student. This may include feeding, toileting, lifting, etc.
  • Works in collaboration with the student’s teachers to provide an effective classroom learning environment for the student
  • Provides individualized instruction/directions to the students

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience and knowledge of students needs at different ages, educational and developmental levels
  • Working knowledge of educational practices, processes, and techniques
  • Willingness to become familiar with Craven County School Districts educational policies and rules as well as federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and rules
  • Skill in communicating verbally, and written, through translation and interpretation
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with others
  • Maintain confidential student information
  • Participates in staff development opportunities by the district.
  • Participates in CPI certification yearly.
Physical Requirements

Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking. Position will require the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing and the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. Work will entail bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching and the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 50 pounds.
