Reporting to the Foreman, the Pipe Trackhoe Operator/Excavator is responsible for operating various types of power construction equipment, such as front end loaders, rollers, bulldozers, or excavators.
Prior experience working with water lines, sanitary & storm pipes is required.
Tasks & Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Excavator/Hoe Operator include, but are not limited to:
- Equipment Operation
- Operate the excavator/hoe and other heavy equipment safely and appropriately.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
- Conduct pre-operational checks, and clean, lubricate, and refill equipment as necessary.
- Collaborate with ground personnel during the excavation and installation of pipes on line and grade.
- Ensure trench is excavated to the proper depth/grade.
- Responsible for placement of water, storm, and sanitary sewer pipes in the trench.
- Follow ground crew directions regarding craning, gravel placement, and grading.
- Cut grade efficiently to keep on schedule.
- Conduct trench work in compliance with OH&S requirements.
- Operate Excavator/Hoe on public roadways with awareness of surroundings.
- Understand issues involving ground disturbance.
- Ensure safe rigging of pipes and manhole barrels during lowering procedures.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
- Train new employees in safe operation of the equipment.
- Operate other heavy machinery and perform related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Certifications:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
- Must have prior experience working with underground pipe (REQUIRED)
- 3-5 years' experience in road construction
- 2-3 years' experience operating a Trackhoe/Excavator
- Knowledge of road construction materials, processes, and industry standards
- Understanding of computerized controls and electronics
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- Professionalism and sense of urgency
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize
- Excellent coordination skills
- Compliance with drug testing and valid U.S. driver's license
- Ability to pass pre-employment screenings and background checks
Working Conditions
- Overtime and weekend work may be required
- Outdoor work in various weather conditions
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly
- Use of PPE required; sunscreen and appropriate gear recommended
