Job Title: Operator

Reports To: Foremen and Team Lead and their delegates

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: Not Exempt

Summary

Operators are knowledgeable and experienced in working with and performing routine maintenance on various types of heavy equipment. They also perform Laborer functions on the job site as needed or directed by their superiors.

Operator II employees have mastery of all conventional heavy equipment, including excavators, loaders, bulldozers, rollers/compactors, and site trucks. They can perform assigned tasks with little supervision, often working alongside other Operators and Laborers, and have experience operating equipment to perform all of the trade and craft services offered by SumCo.

Essential Duties

• Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently to complete assigned tasks.
• Set up equipment to maximize productivity and minimize handling.
• Identify obstacles to productivity and collaborate with the Foreman to resolve them.
• Operate in a manner that minimizes wear and tear to extend equipment longevity.
• Perform daily inspections of equipment before use.
• Conduct routine scheduled maintenance of equipment.
• Report any equipment issues to management for repairs or corrective action.
• Take on Laborer responsibilities as required by workflow and project schedule.

Qualifications

• Experience: 10+ years in the industry, including 6+ years as a practicing Operator (primarily in an excavator) and 4+ years as a Laborer.
• Understanding of limitations and safe operating procedures for various equipment.
• Willingness to adapt to and handle multiple equipment types and tasks.
• Comfort working around utilities, structures, and in diverse site conditions.
• Ability to work well with others in a dynamic crew setting.
• Knowledge of best practices and instructions for assigned tasks.
• Understanding of task sequences and requirements for efficient completion.

Physical Demands

• Lift and move up to 50 lbs unassisted.
• Stand or sit for extended periods.
• Frequent squatting, bending, twisting, and walking.
• Highly physical position.

Work Environment

Work is performed on job sites, often in open, natural settings, exposed to weather conditions such as rain, snow, sun, and extreme temperatures. Tasks may involve work in water, requiring appropriate safety gear and sometimes water entry.
