Black Diamond Plumbing & Mechanical is hiring an Excavation Assistant in McHenry, IL. This full-time role supports sewer and water line projects, working with the Excavation Lead to prepare, excavate, repair, and restore job sites.

Responsibilities include assisting with excavations, operating heavy equipment, digging by hand when needed, and ensuring site safety and organization throughout projects. CDL is a plus, with growth opportunities and company benefits included.

Qualifications

• 6+ months of plumbing, sewer, excavation, or related industry experience preferred.
• Experience or licensing in plumbing is a plus.
• Ability to lift 75 lbs and move up to 200 lbs with assistance.
• Physically demanding labor including digging and trench work.
• Familiarity with shoring, jackhammers, concrete saws, and excavation gear.

Job Title: Excavation Assistant

Reports to: Plumbing/Sewer Manager

Work Hours: Monday thru Friday with rotating weekends

Pay Scale: Starting at $21/hour; Commensurate with experience

Position Summary:

To assist in performing commercial and/or residential sewer/water line repairs, replacements and excavation projects. This role will work alongside Excavation Lead and management team to safely prepare, excavate, repair, and restore job sites.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist with commercial and residential sewer and water line excavations, repairs, and replacements.
• Safely operate or assist with heavy equipment such as backhoes, skid steers/Bobcats, and other excavation equipment as trained and authorized.
• Perform hand digging with shovels when machinery cannot be used or when precision digging is required.
• Identify and assess J.U.L.I.E. locate markings and add additional markings as required by Black Diamond procedures.
• Properly prepare the job site and surrounding areas to protect employees, customers, structures, landscaping, utilities, and personal property.
• Assist with the installation, maintenance, and proper use of shoring systems and other excavation safety equipment.
• Assist with sewer and water line repairs and replacements, including cutting, fitting, assembling, and installing pipe and necessary materials.
• Safely use and maintain tools and equipment including jackhammers, concrete saws, pumps, compaction equipment, and other excavation-related tools.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the project.
• Assist with the removal of debris, materials, and equipment from the job site upon completion.
• Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and proper excavation and trench safety procedures.
• Communicate professionally with customers and act as a positive representative of Black Diamond Plumbing & Mechanical.
• Assist the Excavation Lead with maintaining proper documentation, photos, videos, job notes, and customer communication when required.
• Maintain company vehicles, equipment, tools, and job-site materials in clean and working condition.
• Demonstrate a willingness to learn plumbing, sewer, excavation, and construction skills.
• Be willing and able to obtain a plumbing apprentice license and attend required classes in preparation for the Illinois State Plumbing Exam.
• Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Minimum 6 months of plumbing, sewer, excavation, construction, or other related industry experience preferred.
• Plumbing license is not required; plumbing experience or licensing is a plus.
• Ability to lift at least 75 lbs. and maneuver materials weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance.
• Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding manual labor, including hand digging, carrying materials, working in trenches, and assisting with excavation activities.
• Experience using or willingness to learn the proper use and maintenance of:
  • Shoring systems
  • Jackhammers
  • Concrete saws
  • Excavation equipment
  • Hand and power tools
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
• Class A CDL is a plus, with willingness to obtain a CDL if not currently licensed.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and take direction from the Excavation Lead and Management.
• Dependable, punctual, safety-conscious, and willing to learn.
• Ability and willingness to work overnight projects when required.
