Job description

Under limited supervision, performs maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. Works with priority input from the Fire Department Division Chief to perform specialized and skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of emergency vehicle apparatus assigned to the Fire Department, as well as assisting with the remainder of the City fleet as workload allows. Work is performed with considerable independence according to specific instructions, procedures, and schedules. The position may require after-hours call-outs for priority repairs of emergency vehicles. Assists the Fleet Superintendent in setting repair priorities, reviewing work, maintaining standards, training mechanics, and coordinating shop workload. Uses diagnostic computers and software from various manufacturers to assess equipment problems. Performs related duties such as conducting preventive maintenance, operating shop equipment, providing wrecker service, maintaining service records, and upkeep of the shop and maintenance facilities.

Education:

High school diploma with vocational/technical training in automotive/diesel/mechanical repair.

Experience:

Seven (7) years of experience as a mechanic, including five (5) years as a heavy/diesel and/or EVT mechanic.

Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license
  • EVT Certification
  • ASE Certification
  • Manufacturer-specific training/certification (Ford, Caterpillar, Cummins, etc.)
Preferred:
  • Experience with computerized diagnostic and maintenance management systems
  • Class E License
Note:
  • The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
  • Certifications not possessed at hire must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation to continue employment.
Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate trucks, welding machines, drill presses, backhoes, wreckers, and other tools and equipment. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds frequently, and/or up to ten pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Must be able to lift and carry weights of 10 to 100 pounds.
