Job Description
Job Summary:
A Combination Pipe Welder secures components together using electric welding. Creates accurate welds that do not alter the measurements of the element and can withstand steam, hot water, gases, lubricants, sprinkling, and industrial processing systems.
Primary Duties:
- Lays out, aligns, and welds components fabricated, cast, and forged to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and pipes, according to blueprints and metallurgy.
- Uses Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes as required.
- Bolts, clamps, and welds metal components of piping systems, plates, pipes, tubes, or structural shapes using arc welding equipment.
- Removes excess weld, defective material, slag, and spatter with appropriate tools.
- Connects welding cables to obtain specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse.
- Guides electrodes or guns along weld lines, maintaining proper arc length, speed, and movement for desired fusion and bead quality.
- Prepares electrodes and threads consumable wires through welding guns.
- Inspects welds for bead size and compliance with specifications.
- Starts power supplies for electric current production.
- Performs burning and clean-up using scarfing tips, bevels parts as needed.
- Demonstrates Yates Core Values and Principles.

- Adheres to safety responsibilities, including refusing unsafe work, reporting hazards, wearing PPE, participating in inspections and training, and suggesting safety improvements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5+ years of heavy industrial welding experience.
- Welding school associate degree or equivalent on-the-job training.
- Proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes.
- Ability to certify on multi-process pipe welding.
- May require x-ray qualifications.
Requirements:
- Ability to read and follow welding procedures.
- Strong interpretative and independent work skills.
- Personal tools as per Yates Industrial Minimum Tool List.
- Completion of safety training including Confined Space, LOTO, and Working at Heights.
Physical Demands:
- Work in various weather conditions, elevations, and environments.
- Operate in noisy, dusty, windy conditions.
- Wear safety harnesses at heights, stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, and lift.
- Use vision and hearing for communication and safety.
- Lift up to 25 lbs. and manipulate tools and materials.
