Job summary

Salt Lake Community College is seeking a Reference Specialist to staff the Markosian Library reference desk during afternoon and night shifts, providing frontline assistance to students, faculty, staff, and community users. You will guide users through databases, the catalog, and electronic resources to meet research needs.

You will also assist with online reference services, inform on access and evaluation of information, and help improve information literacy.

Qualifications

• Master of Library Science (MLS) or equivalent degree.
• Knowledge of academic library databases, searching techniques, and information literacy frameworks.
• Prior experience providing reference or library instruction in an academic or public service environment.
• Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Competency with computers and digital library tools.

Responsibilities

• Staff the reference desk and online reference services during assigned shifts.
• Assist users with research inquiries, including navigating the catalog and article databases.
• Guide patrons in accessing and evaluating information to strengthen information literacy.
• Collaborate with colleagues to implement new services within the reference team.
• Support the library's digital presence through web content and instructional resources.
• Deliver strong, culturally responsive customer service to a diverse college community.
