Job summary

NOIRLab is seeking a part-time KPVC Evening Guide at Kitt Peak to present engaging astronomy programs to the public, groups, and schools. You will operate telescopes, explain celestial objects, and represent NOIRLab with professionalism during evening shifts.

The role requires strong astronomy knowledge, public speaking, and flexible scheduling including evenings. Training provided; transportation and meals during mountain shifts are covered.

Qualifications

• Extensive knowledge of observational astronomy and the night sky.
• Ability to translate complex science for diverse audiences.
• Strong public speaking, teaching, and interpretive skills.
• Flexible schedule including late afternoons and nights.
• Proficient PC skills; experience with Google Workspace or Microsoft Office.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to pass background check.

Responsibilities

• Conducts engaging Nightly Observing Programs with enthusiasm for diverse audiences.
• Operates telescopes and accurately points at astronomical objects.
• Provide excellent customer service and project a professional image.
• Prepare for programs and stay up to date on recent astronomical developments.
• Assist with ticketing and merchandise sales in the Gift Shop as needed.
• Help with telescope/equipment and building/grounds maintenance.
• Adhere to NOIRLab safety policies and vehicle procedures.
• Collaborate with Guide & Docent Supervisor and Visitor Center Operations Manager.
• Record Night logs for events and incidents.
