Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Nursing Unit Clerk (NUC) for the Adult Acute Internal Medicine unit (4/5 South) in Iowa City. This 80% evening shift role supports nursing services, patient flow, and unit communications.

Responsibilities include maintaining patient information, using electronic systems, answering calls, and assisting with scheduling and supplies. On-campus position with competitive benefits and a merit pay plan.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school and any combination of clerical experience, health care experience and/or post high school education totaling one year, or two years totals.
• Desirable: 6 months of clerical experience.
• Public contact/customer service experience.
• Medical terminology knowledge.
• Proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel.

Responsibilities

• Communicates with patients, visitors, and health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive relationships.
• Utilizes electronic communication systems to ensure communication among health care team and patients/families.
• Provides information and directions, answers the telephone, takes and delivers messages, and maintains white boards daily.
• Helps answer call lights and relays information to team members in a timely manner.
• Navigates web-based resources and uses online clinical and business applications.
• Performs computer functions within scope of the unit as defined.
• Maintains census information and ADT entries; handles hospital records and charges as appropriate.
• Assists health care providers in scheduling tests and appointments.
• Practices standard infection control precautions.
• Maintains supplies and participates in unit meetings and in-services.
• Performs other tasks as assigned.
