Job summary

Michigan Medicine is seeking a dedicated custodian to maintain clean and sanitary hospital environments in Ann Arbor. You will operate vacuum cleaners, dust, mop, stock supplies, and assist with linen and waste handling while supporting a safe, patient-centered facility.

Work evenings on a 40-hour week, with union guidelines and background checks as part of the process. Join a leading health system focused on education, patient care, and research.

Qualifications

• Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
• Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities (pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching).
• Must not have lifting restrictions.
• Must be able to work around sick/disabled patients in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Operate vacuum cleaning equipment.
• Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings.
• Clean mirrors and interior/exterior glass surfaces.
• Clean toilet rooms and fixtures.
• Stock restroom supplies.
• Dust venetian blinds.
• Spot wash walls to remove marks.
• Clean patient bedside equipment.
• Make beds and change linen.
• Change shower or cubicle curtains.
• Collect and transport waste materials to a central location.
• Report items in need of repair.
• Sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairs.
• Wet mop rooms and small areas of floor or stairs.
• Maintain inventory of supplies.
• Open or lock buildings or rooms.
• Turn on/off lights and equipment.
• Replace burnt-out bulbs on ladders.
• Move and arrange furniture.
• Collect and transport soiled linen.
• Clean assigned area or equipment.
• Wet mop floors and stairs, including carpeted areas.
• Hand mop areas inaccessible to machinery.
• Operate walk-behind cleaning equipment.
• Operate touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment.
