Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Birmingham VA Medical Center is seeking a Food Service Worker for the Nutrition & Food Service area. The role requires attention to steps, procedures, and established sequences in a kitchen environment.

Responsibilities include tray setup, portioning, patient delivery, and assisting cooks with prep. The 11:00 AM–7:30 PM shift covers days, nights, holidays, and weekends; safety and dexterity are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience or training demonstrating ability to perform the duties.
• Applicants evaluated under the OPM Federal Wage System; screen-out element determines eligibility.
• Physical requirements: work in hot kitchen areas; standing, walking, bending; lifts up to 20 lb; may lift more with assistance.

Responsibilities

• Sets up and breaks down assigned station with correct supplies and food items.
• Portions food into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and dishware; supports diet requirements.
• Delivers meal trays to patients' bedsides.
• Reports patient comments and complaints to supervisor or dietitian.
• Assists cooks with food prep: weigh, measure, assemble ingredients.
• Prepares fresh fruit, salads, dressings, sandwiches and simple desserts.
• Reads menus and diet cards; follows tray tickets and patient selections; performs heavy cleaning tasks.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Work Schedule: 11:00AM-7:30PM; includes nights, holidays and weekends.
