The Physical Plant team is responsible for leading and coordinating the operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes skilled tradespeople who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment. The physical plant team also operates the Central Power Plant.

Reporting to the HVAC Working Foreperson, the Evening Facilities Mechanic is responsible for responding to various types of service calls that may comprise the full scope of Physical Plant duties including but not limited to; responding to calls related to leaks, no heat or A/C, electricity failure, rodent control, minor drain clearing, broken glass, kitchen equipment failures, doors not securing, fire alarms etc. This position will triage and resolve service calls and if needed coordinate final resolution with appropriate trade areas.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as shift lead in absence of supervisor.

  • Document complete and accurate records on systems maintained including but not limited to; work orders, time sheet accounting details of repairs and work completed, labor hours expended, materials purchased, and billing status.

  • Follow up on tasks that are in progress, return to tasks as needed, and follow through to completion while keeping management informed of progress.

  • Proactively resolve and/or report any items requiring maintenance or repair for all shops.

  • Offer recommendations to improve operations and Physical Plant.

  • Communicate campus crisis situations to Public Safety, on-call manager, and CPP.

  • Assist students, faculty, members of the visiting public, and guests in a pleasant, courteous manner, providing directions and other assistance as necessary.

  • Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to customers and staff.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and is in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 3pm – 11pm.


This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays and weekends as directed.

This position is classified as essential personnel and as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Five years of progressive experience maintaining or servicing mechanical or electrical systems in institutional and residential facilities.

  • Five years’ experience as a journeyman in the mechanical or electrical trade.

  • Must have S-2, P-2 or E-2 license and continuous maintenance of applicable licenses.

  • Knowledge of residential and commercial building construction including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as knowledge of applicable local, state, and national building codes and other regulations applicable to the area of responsibility.

  • Must be comfortable working around hazardous materials and have knowledge of proper use of personal protective equipment, OSHA and other safety regulations.

  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets and proper waste disposal methods. Proper application of Lockout Tag out, confined space, and other safety procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and build to blueprints, drawings and specifications.

  • Effective communication skills.

  • Demonstrated history of satisfactory customer service and customer follow-up skills.

  • Desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet, e-mail and maintenance management systems.

  • Must have (or be able to obtain prior to hire) and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Must have the ability to be insured under the University's driving policy.

  • Ability to perform the responsibilities of the position listed above with or without reasonable accommodation. Physical Demands/Working Conditions include Balancing, Climbing, Walking, Driving, Carrying (50 lbs.), Pulling/Pushing (100 lbs.), Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (50 lbs.), Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed.

  • Ability to meet the scheduling needs of the position as described above.

  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and work collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.

  • Ability to work overtime when requested

  • Ability to function independently and maintain production with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to provide your own basic hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Effective electrical/mechanical skills including, but not limited to: proper application and use of tools and equipment, electrical distribution systems, small, medium and large HVAC systems including chilled water, split, packaged, gas and oil fired systems, rooftop applications, institutional lighting systems, general maintenance items such as locks, door hardware, and window repair.
