Job summary

Henry Street Settlement in New York's Lower East Side is seeking a part-time after-school program assistant to support youth in grades 6-12. The role is non-exempt, temporary, with evening and some weekend hours, onsite at the Lower East Side location.

You will plan and run hands-on inquiry-based activities, develop ten-week curriculum cycles, track attendance, and help youths build academic and social-emotional skills in a safe, inclusive environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required; college enrollment in related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in after-school or evening programs.
  • Strong knowledge of education and social-emotional development.
  • Thorough knowledge of youth development for grades 6-12.
  • Ability to work on-site evenings and weekends as scheduled.
  • Experience with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good organizational, multitasking and follow-through skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute hands-on inquiry-based projects and enrichment activities.
  • Create activity lesson plans for each ten-week cycle.
  • Provide group and individual instruction using supplied curriculum.
  • Identify opportunities to expand student interests.
  • Distribute materials and information for activities.
  • Maintain attendance and progress records.
  • Assess students and prepare for sharing and exhibits.
  • Attend mandatory trainings per NYC DOH regulations.
  • Submit required paperwork and certifications to Henry Street Settlement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Overview:

  • Type: Non–exempt, Temporary, part-time
  • Schedule: 20-25 hours per week; Monday - Friday 6 pm to 10 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm
  • Location: Fully onsite in the Lower East Side

Program Overview:

The Afterschool and Camp Services Department provides safe, engaging, and enriching programs that support the academic, social-emotional, and personal development of children and youth in the Lower East Side community. Through hands-on learning, recreation, leadership development, and enrichment activities, the program creates meaningful opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop new skills, and foster positive relationships. Working in partnerships with families, schools, and community stakeholders, the program is committed to providing high-quality services that promote student success and well-being in a safe and inclusive environment.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required and enrollment in college in a related field (Education/Human Development/Sociology/etc.) preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in after-school or evening program settings
  • Strong knowledge of education and social-emotional development practices
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate skill development strategies for youth grades 6-12
  • Interest in providing quality hands-on, inquiry-based projects, enrichment, and recreation experiences to youth in grades 6-12
  • Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work with students from a variety of academic backgrounds and skill levels
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and follow-through skills
  • Self-motivated ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible and positive team-oriented attitude with a professional attitude and demeanor
  • Must be able to be on site by 6pm, Monday to Friday and work between the hours of 10am to 5pm on Saturday
  • Ability to attend some daytime meetings and trainings
  • Must be able to work on select holidays

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute appropriate hands-on inquiry-based projects, enrichment, and recreation experiences
  • Create activity lesson plans/curriculum for each ten-week cycle
  • Provide group and individual instruction utilizing curriculum provided
  • Find/create opportunities for students to expand and build upon their interests
  • Distribute materials and information relevant to the activity
  • Maintain records of all participants and activities including attendance sheets and progress within the activity
  • Review and assess individual students via surveys, observation, double entry journals, etc.
  • Prepare students for sharing, culminating events, and exhibits
  • Attend mandatory training courses in compliance with NYC DOH regulations
  • Provide Henry Street Settlement with all the required paperwork, certifications, and support documents in compliance with NYC DOH regulations
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Essential Physical Job Functions:

  • Must be able to move between indoor and outdoor environments
  • Supervise activities and lead groups on field trips as necessary.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, and bend for long periods of time
  • Ability to work onsite in the Lower East Side
