Job summary

Contechs is seeking a Packaging Buyer to join an automotive startup in Troy, MI, on a contract basis. You will lead expendable packaging sourcing for inbound components, execute RFQs, benchmark pricing, and drive cost reductions as production ramps up toward 2027.

The role requires 5+ years in procurement, strong supplier negotiation, and ERP/MRP experience. This position offers a fast-paced environment with potential for long-term conversion.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of purchasing or procurement experience in automotive/manufacturing
• Direct experience sourcing expendable packaging (corrugate, foam, dunnage, custom packaging)
• Strong RFQ management and supplier negotiation skills
• Familiarity with cost analysis, should-cost modelling, and VA/VE methodologies
• Experience with ERP/MRP systems (Netsuite, SAP, Oracle)
• Ability to work independently in fast-paced startup environment with ambiguity and urgency
• Bachelor's degree in related field preferred

Responsibilities

• Lead sourcing and purchasing of expendable packaging for all inbound component suppliers
• Execute RFQ processes, analyse bids, and award based on total cost, quality, and delivery
• Validate and benchmark supplier pricing; identify discrepancies and negotiate corrections
• Develop and track cost reduction initiatives targeting 2026-2027 production ramp
• Partner with engineering, logistics, and quality teams to meet packaging specs and compliance
• Maintain supplier relationships, scorecards, and delivery performance
• Support packaging transitions as sourcing evolves during vehicle launch
