Job summary

Virginia Institute of Marine Science seeks a Research Specialist I to support estuarine fish surveys in the Recruitment Surveys Program at Gloucester Point. The role involves field sampling, data analysis, and laboratory work including fish dissection and aging studies to support research, education, and marine resource management in the mid-Atlantic region.

Candidates should have a high school diploma with lab experience; preferred candidates hold a B.S.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with background in laboratory protocols.
• Experience in marine science or oceanography with aquatic field sampling using standard fishery techniques.
• Knowledge of laboratory and field safety with ability to follow procedures with minimal supervision.
• Proficiency in MS Office software and data entry with attention to detail.
• Ability to work aboard research vessels and perform physically demanding tasks including lifting 50 lbs.
• Preferred: B.S. in marine science/oceanography; vessel certification; R programming.

Responsibilities

• Provide support for estuarine fish surveys.
• Conduct field sampling and data collection.
• Perform laboratory work including fish dissection and aging studies.
• Process data to support research, education, and marine resource management.
• Work long field days (up to 14 hours) and occasional overnight trips.
• Operate in harsh environmental conditions.
