Job summary

Veit is seeking an Estimator in Minnesota to gather data, calculate quantities, and assemble bid proposals for owner submissions. You will solicit subcontractor quotes, assemble materials data, and build bids using standard construction software and approved production rates.

The role requires a foundational background in construction management or civil engineering, proficiency with bidding software, and strong communication skills to interact with management and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering, or 0–2 years bid/estimating experience.
  • Proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to present information to top management, clients, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to maintain Veit policies and procedures.

Job Description

The Estimator’s primary duty is to gather, calculate, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates, collects and maintains current, accurate information on prices from suppliers and contractors, and create the bid in HeavyBid under general supervision to execute final bid proposal for owner in a timely manner.

A Day in the Life
  • Gather, calculate quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to factor materials needed and material movement, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates.
  • Solicits quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers. Keeps DBE/MBE requirements in mind with subcontractor invitations to bid.
  • Collects quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Constructs the bid by adding activities (work to be completed), crews and equipment, adjusting production rates.
  • Prints out bid proposals to create proposal. Sends/delivers to owner or general contractor of each bid in the time frame required.
  • Determines results of bids by contacting General Contractors or communication from the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by Management.
What You’ll Need
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from four-year college or university; or minimum of 0-2 years’ experience bidding and estimating projects or 5 years of related field experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates. Must clearly communicate directions and information.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of situations and events and respond accordingly. Ability to seek counsel, when needed and use a variety of resources.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.

  • Occasional travel and overnight stays to jobsites and client meetings (10%).

Most often an office environment, however jobsite travel is required. Employee frequently works alone and with others. Frequently exposed to variable work environments, including unique conditions outside a typical office environment. Occasionally exposed to moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment. Occasionally exposed to electrical hazards. May be exposed to environmental conditions, loud noises, and variable weather including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.

Additional Job Description

Base Compensation: $65,000 - $81,000

The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
