Job summary

Gray Construction in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Project Engineer to join the pre-construction team. You will assist with estimating project costs, develop quantity takeoffs, and coordinate bids with subcontractors to support accurate pricing and timely proposals.

The role collaborates with operations, design management, procurement, and scheduling to ensure constructability and pricing accuracy while using Gray's pre-construction tools and standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years related experience and/or training.
  • Proficient in standard business and pre-construction software tools.
  • Experience with large-scale, non-residential construction projects preferred.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Support pre-construction efforts on assigned pursuits and projects, assisting with estimating, quantity takeoffs, scope development, and pricing analysis under the direction of pre-construction leadership.
  • Develop accurate quantity takeoffs, pricing inputs, and estimate backup documentation.
  • Assist with preparation of conceptual and detailed budgets, documenting assumptions and questions for review.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to support constructability, phasing, and pricing accuracy.
  • Assist with trade partner and vendor outreach and proposal reviews, confirming scope alignment and escalating issues.

Overview

The Project Engineer will play a key role in the pre-construction phase, helping to estimate project costs and coordinate bids with subcontractors. This position is based out of our Birmingham, AL office.

What we expect

  • Supportspre‑constructionefforts on assigned pursuits and projects,assistingwith estimating, quantity takeoffs, scope development, and pricing analysis under the direction ofpre‑constructionleadership.
  • Develops accurate quantity takeoffs, pricing inputs, and estimate backup documentation consistent with defined assumptions and Gray standards.
  • Assists with the preparation of conceptual and detailed budgets, compiling data, documenting assumptions, and identifying questions or gaps for review.
  • Coordinates with internal teams as directed (including operations, design management, procurement, and scheduling) to support constructability, phasing, and pricing accuracy.
  • Assists with trade partner and vendor outreach and proposal reviews, helping confirm scope alignment and escalating risks or discrepancies.
  • Supports proposal development and pre‑constructiondeliverables, including exhibits, narratives, scope matrices, and related documentation.
  • Participates in pre‑constructionmeetings and reviews, preparing materials, documenting action items, and supporting assignedfollow‑up.
  • Learns and applies Gray’s pre‑constructiontools, processes, and best practices, incorporating feedback and lessons learned to improve performance over time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Who we want

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and a minimum oftwoyears related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proficient in standard business and pre-construction software tools, including document preparation, spreadsheets, email, andestimating‑relatedapplications.

  • Experience with large-scale, non-residential construction projects is preferred.

  • Must possess basic computer skills including the ability to utilize Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), tablets and smartphones.

  • Should be an energetic, self-motivated individual who has a passion for collaboration and professional development.
