Job summary

MEC (Mayville Engineering Company, Inc.) is seeking an experienced mechanical engineer in Raleigh to review blueprints and translate 3D models into practical fabrication steps. You will coordinate with shop floor personnel, programming, and engineering to ensure feasibility of processes such as laser cutting, punching, forming, welding, and powder coating.

The role emphasizes hands-on sheet metal fabrication knowledge, CAD proficiency (SolidWorks/Creo), and familiarity with nesting software like

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent hands-on sheet metal fabrication experience.
  • 3+ years in a precision sheet metal fabrication, machining, or contract manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo and specialized sheet metal estimating/nesting software such as Amada AP100.
  • Strong ability to analyze cycle times, secondary operations labor, and material utilization rates.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Blueprint Review: Analyze 3D CAD models (STEP, IGES), flat patterns, and engineering drawings to determine material specifications, tolerances, and hardware insertion needs.
  • Manufacturing Process Routing: Develop step-by-step fabrication steps including laser cutting, CNC punching, press brake forming, hardware insertion (PEMs), welding (TIG/MIG), and powder coating.
  • Tooling Assessment: Identify custom tooling requirements and press brake tonnage limits required to successfully manufacture the part.
  • Vendor Coordination: Source outside service quotes for finishing processes like plating, anodizing, heat-treating, or silkscreening.
  • Internal Collaboration: Partner with the shop floor, programming team, and engineering to ensure estimated processes match actual production capabilities.
